Leadership An Islamic Perspective
In the introductory chapter the book establishes what you should know by the time you finish the book. These points include: understand the nature and process of leadership from an Islamic perspective, describe the characteristics of effective leaders in general, and of Islamic leaders in particular, analyze your styles as a leader and follower, learn how you can mobilize, organize, and develop your followers Islamically, learn how you, as a leader, can build commitment by acting as a coach mentor, learn how to delegate effectively, and finally understand the steps that will enable you to become a more effective leader. The book defines leadership as the ability to persuade others to seek defined objectives enthusiastically. Within an organization a good leader is needed but so is good management. There are different positions of power when in an organization. The first one is legitimate power, which refers directly to someone’s position in an organization. Reward power is the second type of power, this power refers to having the authority to hand out promotions or pay raises. The third type of power is called coercive power, which uses force to get employees to work. The final type of power is information power, this type of power deals with having and giving information to others so that they can do their work. According to the text there are certain characteristics of an effective leader. The book ranks them from 1 to 8. These characteristics include: honesty, competent, forward-looking, inspiring, intelligent, fair minded, straightforward, and imaginative. These characteristics were determined by a study done by two leadership researchers named Kouzes and Posner. They surveyed 2,615 of the most successful leaders in the United States in order to figure out and rank the characteristics. The book also discusses how leaders must mobilize, developed, and organize their followers. The reason mobilization needs to be done is

    Leadership in Islam

Leadership is defined in many ways. Richards and Engle define it as articulating visions, embodying values, and creating the environment within which things can be accomplished. Schein refer it as the ability to step outside the culture, while Drath and Plus say that it is a process of making sense of what people are doing together for people to understand and be committed. There have been several studies and concepts about it for years now, may it be leadership roles, traits and theories but do not say much about Leadership in the Islamic Perspective. Islam, a religion of peace but often misjudged and misunderstood has a very comprehensive concept of leadership that is centered on faith and values according to Allah (God). Often mistaken as a religion of terrorism, its true meaning and principles say otherwise. As a Maranao Muslim myself with the Christian roots of my Mother and being able to deal with all kinds of cultures with my work, I can conclude that Islam is one of the religions that few people understand but has left a negative mark already in their state of minds. Leadership in Islam is not that different as most would think it would be. This article intends to give you an overview of a true Muslim Leader and how a Muslim manifests his own kind of leadership. Let us literally take Schein’s definition of leadership of STEPPING OUTSIDE THE CULTURE. We have already been familiarized with the Western Concept of Leadership and acquainted with an increasing number of studies by our own leaders and researchers; it’s about time that we step forward towards understanding the Islamic Way of Leadership with an open mind and heart. The Essence of Islam Islam is a Muslim’s Way of Life. They (Muslims) foster Islamic ideals and values in everything they do. IT is both a deen (religion) and a code of life that is adherent to Allah’s commands without objections. IT also means “Peace…

Islam, as it was glorious in its early era with peace, welfare, development and co-operations as its distinct characteristics, seems us in its miserable form today. Blood-shed, restlessness, terrorism, self-interest, meanfulness, materialism and such other evils are prevailing the light of real Islam. Whole system has been perished. The major root cause of this perished system seems the absence of the Real-Islamic-Leadership. The sample which had seen by the era was a role model in form of Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H). World have witnessed the social, political, cultural and religious development in that and soon after that era. Unfortunately the absence of sincere leadership has gradually declined the intensity of the above mentioned distinct characteristics of Islam. The base for this study is to define, explain, compare and evaluate and then finally try to find the Ideal-Real-Islamic Leadership to practice, help and lead the society for the purpose of accomplishing the duty of Man as the Deputy of ALLAH ALMIGHTY. Hence discussing various styles and themes of Leadership, e.g. Islamic and western, help us finding more pragmatic leadership and managing the conflicts among Muslims on the issue of contemporary and leadership.…

However, few empirical investigations have been conducted thus giving impetus to this research. The main purpose of this study is to explore the leadership experiences and practices of undergraduate student leaders on their involvement as student government (SG) leaders at two Islamic institutions of higher learning in Marawi City, Philippines. Specifically, the objective of this study is to explore the student leaders’ understanding of the concept of leadership. Using the exploratory case study, the data were collected from small group discussions (SGD) consisting of six student leaders. Based on the results of the SGDs, the student participants viewed that their student government (SG) experiences assisted them in gaining self-confidence, interpersonal skills, communication skills, and civic consciousness. Moreover, the student leaders articulated that leadership could be divided into four constructs of…
