In the article Island Civilization: A vision for human occupancy of Earth, Roderick Frazier Nash describes how the earth that was once a peaceful planet with freedom of living for every specie turned out to be the earth we are living in now. Had human beings more farsighted they wouldn’t have taken wilderness as something that must be controlled. Nash explains how the mankind built fences and roads to control the wild, and soon there came a time when United States Census claimed there was no longer a frontier left that humans haven’t damaged which created a national angst. As Nash says “The notion of wilderness was passing over a tipping point from liability to asset” (Nash 373) This resulted in acts that emphasized the importance of wilderness. Extinction of many other species was observed so acts were taken for the animal protection and various authors started writing books on the negative environmental impact.…

Martha’s Vineyard is a small island five miles off the southeastern shore of Massachusetts settled in the mid to late 17th century. For nearly 300 years, from the early eighteenth century to the mid twentieth century, it was home to a remarkably high percentage of deaf Americans who developed their own sign language, Martha’s Vineyard Sign Language. This isolated island allowed sign language to flourish beyond the deaf community, dissolving barriers between deaf and hearing prevalent in the rest of the world.…

“Here is your country. Cherish these natural wonders, cherish the natural resources, cherish the history and romance as a sacred heritage, for your children and your children's children. Do not let selfish men or greedy interests skin your country of its beauty, its riches or its romance.” – Theodore Roosevelt. In my own words I think Theodore Roosevelt implies that we need to be grateful for the natural wonders the earth has given us and the history it has behind it, to be considerate and think about the future generations of the planet. If the ignorance of selfish people destroys your home, do not let them. It is too valuable. Our limitations have escaped…
Cole used many ethnic and folk styles of dance (like East Indian, flamenco, and the lindy) as a source for movements. His style was derived from dance movements performed for centuries by common people, but theatricalised for use on the stage. This is why, when pressed for a definition of his movement, Cole termed it "urban folk dance."…
On October 19th we arrived in Maui, Hawaii. We were set to have a great time! We could not wait to begin our adventure on exploring the island. We knew that it would be great so we set off to a place called But, we had know idea that we would witness something horrific. We had heard a lot about this place that was supposably a great place to snorkel. As a result, on October 21st we had decided to go to the slaughterhouse. Fire Island National Seashore was established by congress as a unit of the National Park Service on September 11, 1964 but its roots date back to 1653. A man by the name of Isaac Stratford constructed a whaling station on the Island, giving it the name of Whalehouse Point. During the 18th and 19th centuries whaling was an essential part of their culture because whales provided meat, oil, and blubber. In 1825 the Federal government constructed the Fire Island Lighthouse at the western tip of the island. This was significant because it served as an important landmark for ships coming to New York (“Fire Island History” 1). Skipping ahead about 125 years, Real Estate began to boom, and Fire Island appeared as the foremost summer retreat. As of today, there are about 23 towns that are present on the Island, 17 of which are…

It's silent now. And dark. Morning is still seeking its way to the coast; in four hours it will rise above the mainland mountains to the east. I wait. The sun's halcyon glow will soon touch the shore of Vancouver Island. I wait. Yes, I wait. The morning will bring new adventure, and my wandering imagination rises in crimson flush. At once, the quiet is shattered by the initial belch of sixty-eight degrees let loose from an aging furnace; it slows to a steady rhythmic breath; the warmth gently cradles me. I look out into the inky universe, and there dangling ever so brightly, a planet shines just above the horizon. It reminds me I am here, but I still ponder…
