Isolation In 'Freak The Mighty'
Freak the Mighty Final

Different, isolated, excluded... all of these words describe Max’s room. It’s different from his grandparent’s room because it’s a cellar, it’s isolated from their room, and excluded from the house. Strangely enough, Max feels this way about himself as well.

Throughout the entire story Max refers to himself as a “total goon” which tells the reader that he thinks of himself as dumb person and he feels different. He knows he’s not as smart as everyone else and when he’s put in all the advanced classed with Freak he feels even more unintelligent because he’s surrounded by gifted geniuses. Also, Freak adds to how ignorant Max feels whenever he makes him look up a word in his dictionary because he has trouble with spelling

You would think that it would a good thing being told you look just like your old man, but for Max he was known as the kid with the murderous father which made him feel even more isolated. The first time anyone said he looked exactly like his father was with the Fair Gwen at the beginning of the story when she forcibly took Freak away from Max because the resemblance of him and his father was so terrifying she believed that he was him. The other time was when Max and Freak went to return Loretta’s purse and Loretta and Iggy recognized Max as Kenny’s kid.

Max being friends with Freak makes him an even bigger outsider from everyone else. In the duration of the story it’s obvious that Tony D. bullies Max more that he usually does when he’s with Freak, like when he chased them at the firework show and he also called them “Andre the Giant and the dwarf,” and usually if you are being bullied less people hang around with you which makes you feel excluded. Even Max’s father thought it was outlandish to be friends with Freak, for he said that you can “never trust a cripple.”

Different, isolated, excluded… all three of these words describe how Max feels about himself. He feels different from everyone else because he knows he’s unintelligent, he’s isolated by a shadow of his father, and he feels excluded by being bullied for being friends with Freak. The only thing unusual about this is that these words exactly describe the location of the “down

In chapter 15 of Freak The Mighty, the gifts that Freak and Max exchanged for each other were very meaningful. Max knew that Freak liked to invent things and was extremely smart so he got him a tool kit so he can continue doing what he does. Same with Freak, he got Max a dictionary full of words that were meaningful to Freak and Max. After everyone went to bed, I would've never expected Max’s dad to show up. It was very surprising to me and I got nervous for Max.…

In the book it states “ I just sort of reach down without think and pick up Freak and set him on my shoulders.” ( Philbrick 32 ). During this part of the book this part is included because it is a really important to the plot of the book. It is really important to the plot of the book because it is we're Freak the Mighty had started. It was the first time that Freak was riding on Max's shoulders. In the film this is also included because it is important to the plot of the book but also because this leads to an action based scene of the film were they are chased by Tony D. and his gang. The director kept this the same because without this part of the plot then the whole story would of changed. Freak would not be riding on his shoulders the whole book, they would of been caught by blade and his gang because Freak wouldn't of been able to see where all of them were coming from. Overall, although there are similarities and differences they are included for a reason. The major similarity is included because it is a very important part of the plot and a lot of the story would have been different if it were not…

Isolation was a feeling that was often rare for rank officers to experience and if they did the emotion was never shown. Billy Prior experienced and felt isolation and the feeling of loneliness. Although Prior never directly say I’m lonely, Barker creates the opportunity to identify his feelings and link it with his actions, an example of this is when Prior and Sarah are out and he feels out of place. When he returns Rivers tells him that someone saw him without his hospital badge. His response was, “I wasn’t wearing the badge because I was looking for a girl… as you may or may not know- is not made easier by going around with a badge stuck on your chest saying I AM A LOONY.” The hospital is a badge is a metaphor for people to isolate him,…

David Rosenhan is known for the classic, yet controversial study “On Being Sane in Insane Places” of progress within the mental health field. Rosenhan’s study (1973) of eight people with no previous history of mental illness were admitted at various mental hospitals in America and complained of individual symptoms (auditory illusions, e.g., ‘thud’). He investigated whether psychiatrists could distinguish between those genuinely mentally ill and not. Each pseudopatient behaved normally, and symptoms were not re-reported. However, the average length of hospitalisation was 19 days. This shows context has a powerful role in determining how behaviour is labelled. This led to question the truth in psychiatric diagnoses. The predominant issue was unauthorised diagnoses and needless treatments for a fictional mental illness tolerably accepted. Today, it is the difficulty in gaining treatment for real symptoms of mental disorders.…

Isolation, in medical psychology, is defined as the state or quality of being alone away from others. According to Corey, psychoanalytic theory defines isolation as a defense mechanism that emphasizes on keeping negative cognitions and feelings from influencing other thoughts and feelings (57). Isolation, therefore, is more of a psychological process that creators of psychological horror often exploit to create horrifying films. This paper investigates the effects of isolation on the mental processes of an individual. It also explores the spectacle of isolation in psychological horror films and looks at the deep-seated mental processes and emotions that form the basis for the genre of psychological horror.…

Isolation is a massive factor in what makes 1984 such a memorable and frightening novel. Many forms of alienation present themselves in many forms throughout the book, and without them, 1984 would not be as frighteningly realistic. The kind of society and interaction, or lack of interaction between people is a extremely important factor in what makes 1984 such a unique novel. The citizens in 1984 face alienation from more people in their lives then not, including the opposite sex, their kids or parents, the proles, the inner party, and even themselves.…
