Isolation of Trimyristin from Nutmeg and Preparation of Myristic Acid from Trimyristin by Hydrolysis.
Introduction
In this experiment, trimyristin will be isolated from the nutmeg by extraction, and then used to prepare myristic acid by hydrolysis.
The isolation of a substance from a natural product is a common technique used nowadays. Usually, the isolation is a complex procedure and requires a lot of steps and preparation. For this experiment, trimyristin will be isolated from nutmeg, in which it is present in large amounts; therefore the isolation is not as complex. The process that will be used to isolate trimyristin from the nutmeg is called extraction. It involves a solvent, which moves …show more content…
First, a fatty acid salt will be produced in the process of saponification. Such process is widely used to produce soap. The theory of the reaction involves breaking the ester bonds with the presence of strong base and heat. The hydrolysis reaction will then be used to produce myristic acid. The reaction will be performed in from of refluxing. Refluxing lets the solution with the reactants boil but does not let it evaporate. During this process, the myristic acid is formed. The purity of the myristic acid will be tested by the melting point. A mixed melting point concept will also be used to test the fact of producing the correct products. Mixed melting point concept depends on the fact that the melting point of an impure compound will be lower than that of a pure one. Even though trimyristin and myristic acid have very close melting points, the mixture of the two will melt at a lower …show more content…
The values were found during the experiment and analyzed to make a conclusion about the success of the experiment. The melting points of pure trimyristin and the myristic acid are close to the literature values of the melting points for the corresponding compounds. This indicates that the purified substances are pure. The melting point of the 1:1 mixture of the two substances is in between the melting points of the corresponding compounds, however, it was predicted to be lower the two because it is a mixture. The value should become lower because the melting point of an impure compound is lower than the melting point of a pure
