The book I read was Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, a book explaining the exciting story of a nineteen year old boy named Chris McCandless. Chris was born into a wealthy family with siblings; Chris later attended Emory where he would already start to isolate himself from others. Isolating himself from others would eventually cause Chris to make a journey he would later regret and not return from. This will show how humans are not meant for isolation and it will not lead into anything helpful and won’t turn out in your favor.…
The desire to belong is a basic human emotional need. As humans, we crave love and acceptance by family and friends. Often, our greatest fear is losing these people from our lives. Children raised in a secure and loving home in a community where they feel like they fit in, will often thrive emotionally. Children who are abandoned or abused by those responsible for caring for them, will likely feel estranged from their communities and may rebel against their communities or become overly withdrawn. For alienated individuals, coming to terms with their childhood traumas and bonding with others who similarly suffered, could create a community where they can learn to trust others and develop the type of secure relationships that we all need…
I want you to do something for me, I want you to think of your parents, now in the same thought put yourself in the picture. Now think, what have you inherited from your parents, is it just their physical appearance or is it also their way of thinking. What if I were to tell you, that it is something much more, that each and every one of us, has inherited our parent’s sense of belonging or not belonging, and then developed it. Forces both external and internal shape our identity. The people that form our families, the friends that surround us and the positions we occupy in society, are all links that together form our belonging in this world. Belonging is important in Romulus My Father by Raimond Giata and Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger as they both show that fitting into a group is integral to human existence and brings more meaning to one’s life.…
Being an outsider in society can give strength to a person, but in some cases it does not, and may even weaken an individual. Depending on the type of person, being an outsider in a community may or may not encourage strength. There are several cases where being an outsider made someone a stronger person, and there are also several cases where being an outsider has harmed a person.…
An individual’s upbringing creates a powerful formative influence over the creation of a sense of belonging.…
Can the upbringing of a person distinguish one from the society one lives in? In Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, John faces isolation in both societies that he belongs to. Linda, Shakespeare, and the Malpais religion create a discrepancy between the New World and the Reservation leaving John as an outsider from both.…
I. Describe the three kinds of genotype-environmental effects Scarr and McCartney assume and give an example of each.…
Geographically my environment spanned from as far south as Texas and as farther north as Ohio. But has always been marked by love between family, and values of honor, respect, and commitment. With little to no exemptions in a stray of these values.…
The information that was gathered, gave a vivid understanding of how speciation is created. Over time life brings change, in that change it is about adjusting. Species have to adjust to their environments whether they want to or not. Us as humans are adjusted to our environment without even knowing it. People up north are use to cold weather, opposed to people in the south…
When new technology is displayed children want the newest technology and parents not becoming aware of how it would affect their social interactions get it for them. Parents believe that children should have a cellphone because there could be emergency and they are able to check up on their children. It is a great concept to instill when it comes to raising children, but phones now a days are designed to have thousands of applications, send messages, facetime, listen to music, and etc. This causes children and teenagers to become wrapped up in technology to the point they would rather be on their phones than to go outside and play with their friends. This leads to the development of social isolation. Social isolation is the complete or near-complete…
My early social experiences have contributed to my development and affected my educational experiences in a productive way. Throughout my years in school, I was not a student that was outspoken or had a lot of friends. I felt that I did not have time for socializing because I wanted to make the best out of my education. However, I participated in a lot of social events when I was younger. Being a Girl Scout in third grade taught me how to be sociable and work together with other people.…
I tried my best to fit in but arriving at a completely new area and having to make new friends was an extremely scary thought for me. I didn’t know anyone, I didn’t have any friends, and I felt isolated. All I wanted to do was go back to California to the familiar faces I left behind. As the year progressed, I was forced to break my shell and interact with others in my class gradually becoming more confident in myself and making new friends. The internal battles I had to endure in me becoming more social eventually taught me not to be afraid to build relationships. Learning this at an early stage was very beneficial to me because now I am not afraid to talk to complete strangers and even befriend…
Belonging to a social group builds character and identity. Contrastingly, alienation forces one to ask why they are alone and thus the strength of identity is challenged.…
Change can be difficult part of a person’s life, oftentimes quite harrowing. Some may find change to be a good thing. I, on the other hand, find it to be more than former. This great change in my life was when my family was forced to move to a new city when I was fourteen. Not only, was I facing a great change, but it would be a change that would affect me for the rest of my life. When I found out that we were moving, I was frightened. I was going to lose all of my friends. I was going to have to start over. That was scary. Being the new kid in school is awful and upsetting, and I was not looking forward to that at all. Already being a shy person who has trouble connecting with new people, being forced to start at a new school was absolutely terrifying.…
