Isopentyl Acetate Synthesis Lab Report
This experiment was designed to prepare and purify isopentyl acetate, often known as banana oil due to the familiar odor of the fruit, via Fischer esterification. Steps taken were direct esterification of acetic acid with isopentyl alcohol and simple distillation to obtain pure isopentyl acetate. The equilibrium reaction does not favor the formation of the ester; therefore, the reaction must be shifted to the right in favor of the product. To achieve this, Le Chatelier’s Principle was used to force the reaction to take place as it was a reversible equilibrium reaction. Acetic acid was used in excess as it is easily removed from the reaction mixture and is less costly. The activation energy is lowered with the help of sulfuric acid and it also

Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to synthesize Isopentyl Acetate using a Fischer esterification reaction. Fischer esterification is an acid-catalyzed condensation of an alcohol and a carboxylic acid, yielding an ester and water. Isopentyl Acetate has the scent of banana oil, once synthesized it will be purified by distillation. Then the analysis of the sample using H NMR and IR will determine purity of the product.…

Procedure: To begin this experiment the reaction mixture of banana oil was already performed prior, by a process of reaction and separation under heat reflex. Purification and analysis will preform, by a simple distillation process. 21.44 g of banana oil will be used at the beginning. The liquid distillation occurs when the temperature reaches between 132-143 C, collect all the liquid in the vial after the temperature reaches this point. Last record the gas chromatogram in order.…

Many esters are naturally occurring compounds that are responsible for the fragrance of fruits and flowers. Isopentyl Acetate is the compound responsible for the smell of bananas. However, when Isopentyl acetate is treated with H3O+ it will hydrolyze back into the carboxylic acid, which will change the fragrance. In this experiment 3.11g of Isopentyl Acetate were produced with a 51.92 percent yield.…

In the banana oil lab we began with isopentyl alcohol + acetic acid  isopentyl acetate + Water. We needed for this experiment a hot plate, clamps, pipette, 5mL vial, caps, hoses and a thermometer. Upon starting, our group set up an open system experiment that allowed gases to be released to avoid pressure build up. We mixed together to molecules, 1.0mL of isopentyl alcohol, 1.5mL of acetic acid and added three drops of sulphuric acid. The acetic acid was used as a catalyst to speed up the reaction. Once all the needed chemicals were added we waited for about 70-75mintues for the reaction to take place. The desired temperature for the reaction was 150oC. We also had the solution at a constant stir.…

The melting point of a compound is the temperature at which the solid is in equilibrium with its liquid. A solid compounds changes to a liquid when the molecules acquire enough energy to overcome the forces holding them together. A mixture melting point is useful in confirming and used to indentify an unknown compound, which we will be doing in this particular experiment.…

The objective for the experiment was to perform a reduction reaction on the ketone group of camphor to the OH group on isoborneol. In order to successfully synthesis the reactant to the product, NaBH4 was used as the main reagent to reduce the carbonyl double bond. One believes the formation of isoborneol was successfully due to the product’s percent yield, IR, and melting point. During the lab, .077 grams of isoborneol was yielded from the camphor reduction. In result, .077 g compared to an theoretical yield of .102 g equaled an overall 75% percentage yield.…

Conclusion: The purpose of the Acetaminophen synthesis experiment was to verify that the synthesis process did proceed acetaminophen. Refluxing a combination of acetic anhydride and p-aminophenol created acetaminophen when it was isolated from the mixture. Filtration and centrifuging the product ensure purification of the product. The pure product had 167.7-169.8℃ melting range and 22.4% yield. It also exhibited all the functional group of Acetaminophen.…

The purpose of this lab was to determine whether a sufficiently pure sample of synthetic banana oil could be prepared through Fisher Esterification. During the experiment, the reaction mixture was purified through an extraction workup, and according to the instructor, once getting the density of the product and the actual yield; it was not required to use the distillation method.…

The percent yield of the isopentyl acetate was 74.3% and this low percent yield could have occurred due to some amount of gas escaping from reflux apparatus’ top or apparatus was not fully closed so that some of the heat escaped and did not proceed the reaction well, leaving reagents. Another source of error could be that some of the organic layer could have been transferred along with the aqueous layer when the aqueous layer was getting separated from the organic layer by a pipette. One of the methods that favors the formation of an ester can be made by adding excess acetic acid and another method is conducting Fischer esterification, which water will be removed to form the ester. There are several ways to have more isopentyl acetate.…

Our data displayed supports the notion that by increasing the acidity of the catalyst, the production of aspirin will increase. Our hypothesis was proven correct. In our data, we calculated the percent yield and percent error of each trial. We also calculated the average of the percent yields and the percent errors of each catalyst. In the end, we saw that for the sulphuric acid catalyzed aspirin, we saw an average of 69.7% percent yield and an average 30.3% percent error.…

Acetylsalicylic acid is the active pharmaceutical ingredient in aspirin and can be synthesized by the esterification reaction of salicylic acid and acetic anhydride in the presence of an acid catalyst. An esterification reaction is when an acid is converted into an ester by combining with an alcohol and removing a water molecule. When heating the salicylic acid mixture in the warm water bath, the mixture should be removed from the bath within 8 minutes, to reduce the chance of the acetylsalicylic acid decomposing. The purpose of this procedure is to isolate acetylsalicylic acid from its accompanied acid catalyst, unreacted salicylic acid, acetic anhydride, and other impurities. Their removal can be done by crystallization, a purification technique in which, upon cooling, product crystals will be separated from impurities that are present in the solution, which can then be filtered off using a vacuum. In this procedure, acetic anhydride is used to wash the reactants, and phosphoric acid is used as a catalyst to…
