Feeling sad is a normal human emotion at some point in peoples life. It is normal to be sad over a breakup, failing a class, or the death of someone close to you. Most people will overcome the feeling of sadness as time passes by. Others experience depression, which is a combination of feelings like extreme sadness, discouragement, despair and hopelessness that can lasts weeks or months. The number of people that experience depression is on the rise.
Rubins stated the following:
In 2007, slightly less that 3 out of every 100 people in the U.S. were treated for depression. This compares to about 2 per 100 in 1997 and less than 1 per 100 in 1987. The data indicate that the percentage of people treated for depression tripled in the early 1990s with a more modest increase in the early 2000 era. About 8.7 million people in this country received medical treatment for depression in 2007 compared to about 6.5 million in 1997. (p.1)
There are many different ways a person can show signs of depression. Depression affects a persons’ mood and emotions. It also changes their way of thinking, therefore causing changes in a persons’ behavior and
