I am from Napoleon, Ohio. At the corner of Yeager Road and State Route 108, there is an old abandoned factory near a railroad track that has been partially torn down. This factory covers nearly forty acres of land. During World War II, this plant produced magnesium, and later, the Atomic Energy Commission reopened this factory as a beryllium production facility. Shortly after that, this plant was owned by Goodyear Tire, and they made tires and coated tire rims. To this day, this factory still has four beryllium pits located behind the rubble in the far east corner. It is a site for sore eyes.
I used to live right next to this factory; the only thing that separated us was a small bean field. I was very worried about drinking the water out of our faucet because of the proximity. I was worried about my dogs wandering over that way out of curiosity.
Over the years, many events have occurred including an explosion . After the plant closed, it caught on fire. The EPA and Army Corp of Engineers were called to the scene and people wearing HAZMAT suits were decontaminating fire fighters and other responders. To this day, I know that the Army Corps of Engineers and EPA still come out and check the area frequently. According to these government agencies, there is no health hazard. I don’t know why they just can’t tear the factory down, clean up the mess and not have to worry about future problems. The land that the plant is on will never be used for farm land because it is contaminated.
As far as I know, a gentleman bought the property for a nice chunk of change to tear out and sell the scrap. I have seen that man there a hand full of times over the past four years. I am honestly surprised that he feels that it is safe to be on the property without some sort of training or suit.
Hopefully, the state will realize that the factory needs to be torn down and the possible health hazards that can occur not only to humans but to
