“Destitution at it it’s finest”, a sentence that correctly describes South Korea in the 1960’s. “Wealthy and developed”, one that barely matches its description today. Many of you might criticize my unceasing focus on South Korea’s transformation from poverty to prosperity. Well it’s just a belief filled with certainty that South Korea could act as a potential role model for Rwanda. Now, again many of you might already be informed of this or probably share a similar thought but the only question that perturbs us is HOW!?
“It’s the little things that matter most”, a wise man once said. Well come to think about it they really do matter. In no Asian city will you find infrastructure more opulent than in Seoul. There is no argument that this was achieved due to an abundant number of reasons, the one usually thought about being the incessant support from much richer countries. However, let’s keep in mind the little things that keep proving necessary for these kinds of achievements to be attained. It’s how they manage their time, how dedicated they are and their desire to see results. It’s these small things we ought to copy from these people 6687 miles away from home.
I spent the whole of last week trying to figure out what it is exactly that we need to learn from the Koreans and I have to say I managed to capture a number of things. Give a Korean a task and he will not rest his head until he properly completes it, give a Rwandan the same task and he will be looking forward to the rest time before he even commences. Now I wouldn’t like to be misunderstood to be saying that Rwandans are “lazy” instead it’s the lack focus which is a major ingredient in the recipe of underdevelopment. We Rwandans lack the focus. If we can hoard this focus then hold up to it, then we can be sure to achieve what has been achieved by the Koreans.
