The different styles of yoga that are included in this manual are: Hatha Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, Viniyoga, Jnana Yoga and Mantra Yoga mostly. These styles of yoga have been included in this manual as they all promote the alleviation of distress and anxiety.
Hatha Yoga:
Hatha Yoga is widely used in the West as it uses breathing methods and particular poses to create a balance between the mind and body. This practice of yoga allows minimising of stress and anxiety as well as an enhancement in strength and endurance. It provokes peace and a deeper spiritual belonging as it is a gentle and slow style of Yoga.
Kundalini Yoga:
Kundalini concentrates on cleansing the mind, emotions and body of an individual. It is formulated to provoke energy through its poses. Breathing techniques and posture is important in this style as these features make the style successful in unlocking the Kundalini energy especially from the spine of an individual. The style of Jnana is one of the ‘three paths towards enlightenment”.(McElaney, J. 2013). Through this style of Yoga, clarity and peace can be achieved, which brings relief in both tension and stress.
Mantra Yoga:
Mantra is a unique yoga style as it focuses on the chanting, verbally or mentally. The repetition and the vibration of these sounds allows the nervous system to relax and reduce stress. Mantra Yoga is a style often used by Eastern religions in order to provoke inner awareness of those individuals. This style of yoga promotes concentration as well as spiritual and mental devotion.
Yoga is a beautiful technique used to find balance between one’s mind and body. Breathing exercises assist in this balance.
To get one in the right mind set and to assist in the relief of stress and anxiety, five breathing exercises are shown: 1. Sama Vritti / Equal Breathing:
Inhale through your nose for four seconds and then exhale for four seconds. The breathing through the nose allows a normal block to the breath. If you feel comfortable, take it to between six and eight seconds.
