J. Edgar Hoover As My Great American.
I chose J. Edgar Hoover as my great american, because I thought he had a story that was worth being told. Hoover was like the Rosa Parks of the FBI, he shaped the FBI to be what it is today. Hoover was born on January 1, 1895 (Gentry). He was born into a scottish-presbyterian family of civil servants (Gentry). I hope you enjoy learning about this extraordinary man. Hoover achieved many great things during his lifetime, so here are just a few.He received his bachelor of laws degree in 1916, then his masters in 1917(Gentry). He started working for the department of justice on July 26, 1917(FBI.gov). In December of 1919, he hired the first black agent in the FBI (Gentry). He became the assistant director of the FBI on August 22, 1921
(Gentry). After that he became the official director of the FBI on May 10, 1924 (FBI.gov). In 1955, he achieved one of the greatest things in his entire career; he created the Counterintelligence Program (COINTELPRO) (Gentry). Those were just a few of his many great achievements. During his lifetime Hoover received many great awards 3 of them from presidents(Gentry).In 1939, the National Academy of Sciences awarded Hoover its public welfare medal(FBI.gov). Then in 1940,Hoover was presented the medal of merit by President Harry Truman(Gentry). Then a few years later, in 1955, President Eisenhower presented Hoover with the National Security Medal (Gentry). Then President Eisenhower presented him with another award the following year. He presented Hoover with the president's award for distinguished federal / civilian service (FBI.gov). A few years later Hoover was awarded the “Great Living Americans” award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce (Gentry). His most cherished awards he said were the one’s given to him by President Eisenhower (FBI.gov). Hoover had many important things happen in his life, and all of them helped him to reach Director of the FBI on May 10, 1924 (Gentry). On July 26,1919,he accepted a 9,000 dollar a year clerkship in the U.S. Department of Justice (FBI.gov). Then on December 10, 1923 Harlan Stone asked Hoover to act as assistant director of the FBI (Gentry). In July 1933 attorney General Cummings announced that he had announced Hoover the director of a new division (Gentry). He was assistant director for about a year (Gentry). Before he became official Director (Gentry). he had many more extremely important things in his life, but those were just a few.
