portrayal of conflict, slowly progressing to resolve the problem. Overall the concert effectively delivers the theme of conflict and settlement with each of the “stories” told in each dance.
Analysis
In the first piece choreographed by Ian Eastwood we can see that the video is set mid-day and it leads up to a smoothie shop. This is where the dance begins to occur. The two performers are dressed in everyday cloths and the performance is supposed to start very casually. The costume for the main choreographer is chosen very wisely. The song that is playing, chivalry is dead, is well represented by the costume. He has a nice fedora on and a shirt. The fedora adds to the “gentleman” aspect of the song. The colors are very bright and allow the dancer to create a happy vibe in the dance that is performed. The stage is in the middle of the smoothie shop with no one around them. I think that this piece is very powerful. It shows that dance has the ability to give people happiness and bring them together. When the video first began the girl was upset and having a bad day. The boy on the other hand was very happy and was excited for his day. Once the boy started dancing, he transferred much of his positive energy onto the girl. Slowly as the dance progressed the girl became happy and also started dancing. The artist is trying to convey that dance has the ability to reflect changing emotions. At the end of the dance the girl became more positive and they both walked out together, thus showing that it can also bring people together. Overall this dance was well choreographed and directed. From the beginning of the video it brings the audience in by presenting a short dialogue and setting the overall dynamic of the dance. Once the audience realizes that the boy is going to use dance as a way to impress the girl it becomes evident why the song was chosen. The dance revolved around the song and the movements adjusted to each beat, which I found to be very interesting and added to the overall livelihood of the dance.
The second performance piece was “Jazz Roots”, a very jazzy, playful, and sensual dance, set to upbeat jazz music. The costume depicts a very old school look consisting of hats, striped suit, shirts, and the suspenders making this piece very fun and entertaining. The basic theme of the dance is Jazz era. Every dancer has their own style of costumes to show their individuality. This dance follows the overall theme of the dance concert very well, when the dance first start we can see that the dancers are almost facing each other. They are trying to see who is the better dancing by showing their moves individually, this would be considered the conflict of the piece. They keep dancing against each other until the end when all the dancer begins to do the same move, at this point the dancers are just enjoying what they came there to do which is dance. They all came together to create a unified dance, putting the conflict to an end.
The third piece by the Jabbawockeez was very interesting. It was a hip-hop dance that had exciting, athletic movements and appropriately up-beat hip-hop music with lots of strong beats. The costumes were standard amongst all the dancers. They all had mask on, black shirts and all their bodies were covered up. I think this was done to create a mysterious effect, the audience has no idea what they are doing at any point of the dance. All emotions can only be seen by the gestures that are made and the different movements that are made throughout the dance. The setting seems to be a conventional stage at a dance competition. The mask that they are wearing are white because the light mask gives it a more neutral effect and allows the dancers to be more creative with their emotions that are present in their dance moves. If the color was dark people would assume the dance will be more serious. In this performance the music and tunes play a huge roll in the dance moves that the performers have. For instance, there was a point where the dance moves followed the beat of a cell phone ringtones. It almost seems like they are playing with the different beats, giving the dance a much more entertainment aspect. This piece did not present a clear theme. None of the elements- lighting, costume, music, and movements- seemed to convey a specific theme, rather it presented a multitude of different interpretations of dance. This dance seemed to be a performance to mainly displaying the techniques, rather than a specific idea or a concept. This performance was very powerful and allowed the audience to really get involved in the dance. Not only did the performer dance but they also had many point where they had a short “skit” to keep the audience interested in the performance. I was specifically fond of this dance because it incorporated many different dance forms throughout the dance. There were points where the dancers did hip hop, break dance, and in the middle one of the performers even did a couple ballet steps. One thing I really enjoyed is that the dancers all seem like they are having fun with the dance and love what they are doing even though we can’t see their faces. The fourth performance piece was “Queen Bohemian Rhapsody”.
In contrast with the first few pieces, this was more traditional in that a very pleasant and soothing ballet piece. But the interesting part about this piece is that the song isn’t a typical music you would do a ballet dance to. The music tells a story while the dancer is creating movements that complement the music. Although the dance itself was very powerful and unique, the music did not always match the movements. There were some point where the song sped up and so did the dancers but others points where it was not sync at all. But, that the thing about dance, it doesn’t necessarily have to go with a certain beat or
rhythm. The final performance by Case Kismat tells the most powerful story. The music, the costume, and the dance were all very dynamic, colorful, and full of energy. The theme of the dance is about the revolution of India for a fight for freedom against British. The appropriate use of and changes in the background lighting creates a changing effect of the mood of the dance and the changing emotions. The lighting is fairly dark to help portray the conflict and distressing emotions involved in love between two people turning into hate. The stage prop sets the stage for where the story take place, which is a village of India. Throughout the dance the costumes are changing along with the story. The choreography was very well in sync with the music and the lyric. In all, both the technical as well as the theatrical or expressive component were both very well conveyed in this performance.
