Jack and Jill storytelling
It’s been ten months since I’ve escaped. To this day, I can still hear my brother’s whimpers begging me to run. I’ve experienced nightmares since that day and suffer from dreadful headaches. It was March 23, 1964, the sun was shining bright through the windows. It was a perfect day for my brother Jack and I to go out to a nearby park and play fetch with our dog skit. He wore his favorite pair of navy blue shorts with a white buttoned down shirt, while I wore a navy blue dress with a white ribbon placed above my waist. Jack’s hair was neatly combed to the right. Mom insisted she’d add white ribbons onto my pigtails. Our shoes were quite similar, they were the ones you’d use for school. Mom always tried to have Jack and I match since we were twins. She thought we looked adorable. We had the same shade of brunette as our hair color, light green eyes and the same shaped nose.
We walked towards the park after our mom kissed us both on our cheeks. Ms. Grace worked at a bakery and greeted us with that warm smile she had while we passed. Everyone knew each other since we lived in a small town. After walking for 7 blocks we arrived to the park. We threw a stick that we found lying on the grass for skit to get.
After what appeared as 15 minutes, a tall male figure appeared in front of us. He wore a gray suit and carried some sort of black briefcase. “Hey fellas, I’m John.” He said. John, I thought to myself. I don’t remember a John living here. “Would you two kids like some ice-cream, I own an ice-cream parlor not far from here.” He grinned widely. Without hesitating Jack accepted. “No Jack, sorry sir we can’t.” “Oh come on Jill, it’s free ice cream.”
I gave in and accepted too, I imagined the colorful sprinkles on an icy cold chocolate ice cream cone. The man led us to his car and opened the back door for us. We adjusted the seat belt and he drove off. I looked to my left side and saw Jack with a huge grin planted on his face. He seemed like the happiest

It was Tuesday, March first, 2011, my mother woke me up so I can start getting ready for school. I rose with eager anticipation, just four more days until my thirteenth birthday and I just couldn’t wait. I brushed my teeth and hurried down to eat the complimentary breakfast offered to us by the hotel we were staying at. You see we had been staying at a hotel for the past five months because the home we had been renting was foreclosed on so the utility companies turned off the power and the electricity. We had to get down at just the right time so that there was a small crowd but a lot of food so that we can take food back to the room to save for dinner. After breakfast, we…

It was a casual August afternoon in Minneapolis, people walking the down the sidewalk, strangers passing by. We were visiting my old hometown. I was walking with Beth, and we were messing around. I used to have an inside joke with one of my friends from fifth grade, “Girl you need to chill.” It stuck once I moved. Anyway, Beth had just told me to chill, so, I walked into the nearest cold building. Which of course, ended up being a meat locker… 15 minutes later I was coming out and saw an all too familiar pair of square glasses. Before I could see her face, she turned away. Her bleached tip hair swung across her shoulders. The dark skin, the hair and glasses, it had to be Miracle Brown. This is the girl who was one of my best friends in sixth grade. She started heading down the street, so I told Beth to meet me back at our hotel.…

For twelve years I got to see everything she did. We went to Disneyland once! It was awesome! My favorite ride was Splash Mountain. First, we went into the boat thing. Markie was in front of us and Randall behind us. They are her brothers. We creaked up the slope and turned left. We went to the right and through a short tunnel. Small figures were everywhere, as we slowly went up a steep hill. When we got to the top water was all over the place. I had wondered why. KA-BOOM!!!!!!! We were going down the biggest hill ever! Water was getting in my hair. Markie, Lisa, and Randall were screaming at the top of their lungs. Thirty feet, twenty feet ten feet, SPLASH!!!! I got so wet, that I wouldn’t have to take bath for a month! The water was up to Lisa’s feet in the boat. It was slow for the rest of the ride, but there was a lot of chatter going on, but mom ands dad looked scared. “Want to go on It’s a small world?” asked Helen. Melvin just nodded.…

I was nervous nonetheless; Palms sweaty, heart racing, and tear-filled eyes was how I met them. As soon as the sun set the band started playing and the people poured in. The whole neighborhood invited themselves and soon enough I was having trouble distinguishing between who was and wasn’t my family. Warmth filled the air with all the stories being told, all the long awaited laughs caressed our ears, and the love that poured out of everyone was enough to last a lifetime. My uncles if they weren’t embarrassing themselves from the lack of dancing skills they had, I could hear them singing their sorrows in tune with the mariachi band in the background. My Aunts filled me in with the town gossip of the last fourteen years, making sure not to leave any secrets out. Smiles painted across our faces, my cousins and I took to the dance floor, skipping around until our feet bore blisters and sweat drenched our clothes. My grandparents told me stories from when they were younger. They shared with me the story of how, despite disagreements from each other’s family, they fell in love and stayed together till this day. My grandfather recalled to me how he had tried numerous times to woo my grandmother with sunflowers just so she would let him walk her home. “She rejected the roses so I brought her the Sun.”, he…

At that point I couldn’t even breathe, he knew my family, how in the world? So we ended up at the restaurant, I cannot recall the name, but it was a steakhouse type place. This is where the most amazing thing happened. We talked about everything from life to music to music being someone’s life. He said something that made me feel incredible. He said, “Rob listen, I want you guys to keep…

I need to escape, I thought. I was tensed up. I waited for their point of weakness. It would be when they were lifting me up to put me in jail. I pretended to faint. I waited until I was being lifted into the cell. I drew my arm back and hit one guard in the gut. I swung my other arm back to hit the other guard in the nose. He dropped me and I ran. I saw buildings on either side of me. I heard the yells of the…

The summer I spent with her was beautiful, every day was precious. We always spent time nestled up on the couch; it was something special and it was better than any beach trip or pool party that everyone was participating in. The summer of love may have been in 1967, but with her it was in 2016. She had a touch that was as warm as hot chocolate and her skin was as smooth as silk her hair was as wavy as the earths many rivers. Her eyes were beautiful and a lovely dark brown. I was in the presence of a Goddess, and her name was Meagan Wilder. She was 5’7 and the best thing I had ever seen walking in a sundress and sandals.…

I’d be lying if I said my older sister and I weren’t alike. We both have the same small, pursed lips and the same eyebrows and hairline. Our eyes both slightly curl at the corners, and our ears stick out a bit too much. Beyond looks, though, even our mannerisms are the same. We both chew our gum annoyingly loud and laugh with the same obnoxious giggle. I’m aware of these similarities; I have been since I grew tall enough to see my reflection in the mirror over the bathroom sink. However, a few years ago, the day I turned thirteen, I dyed my auburn hair, the same shade a share with my sister, a deep, rebellious, black. I plucked my eyebrows so much they disappeared. I watched my sister’s girly, flirty habits and suddenly saw them as revolting. I finally decided to chew with my mouth closed and suppress my giggles until I suffocated. As a thirteen year-old girl with a new haircut and a new attitude, I suddenly saw the world as an enemy. Anything that I had been taught or had accustomed myself to was to be rejected. My life had become, forthwith, a rebellion.…

It was the second day of second grade. I was on the school bus sitting next to my best friend when the bus suddenly halted, making a loud SCREECH. I looked out the window to see the reason why. There was a metro bus, green, long, and making me late to school. As I was staring at the bus and the line of people that seemed to stretch out for miles, one person, in particular, caught my eye. It was a woman she looked young, probably 19, but she looked foreign. Foreign to the average American, but not me. She reminded me of my aunt. She was wearing a lavish dark cloth carefully stitched with elegant embroidery that covered her whole body. I didn’t continue to think much of it as I began to play patty cake with my friend, but a few moments passed…
