the snowy trails knowing that the temperature was well below freezing point. “what was a little frost? A bit painful, that was all. It was never serious” [London 68]. This citation demonstrates how the character makes his decisions so ignorantly and carelessly. His ignorant decisions eventually lead to his drastic change in character.
Camorlinga, Noel 2
By the end of the story of to build a fire the man begins to make decisions more attentively because if he doesn’t he would soon encounter death.
an example of this would be when the man loses feeling in his hands but he still tries carefully to start a fire. “now it was a problem of life or death with the circumstances against him” [London 77]. The quote demonstrates how the character starts to realize that if he doesn’t make changes in the way he looks at survival and decision making he will end up dying. it also shows how the author uses tone in a way to describe how the beginning of the story was very calm and carless but by the end it was very nervous.
Someone who read to build a fire might argue that the man is not a dynamic character, but this is not true. While that man doesn’t have a lot of features that contribute to the change of the character which could lead to people thinking that he is not a dynamic character. “you were right, old fellow. You were right” [London 79]. Although he doesn’t undergo through many changes, the changes he does go through are an important because is changes his perspective, his actions and his
characterization.
Given these points the man from to build a fire is the dynamic character due to the changes in his character he goes through so drastically. The author also uses tone and somewhat of characterization to show change in the character. The man goes from a calm carless man to a nervous precautions man.
