It is easy to imagine the complete chaos and utter despair of the aftermath of an atomic bomb explosion. While most of us have never experienced it, the various atomic bomb tests of the 1950s and 1960s, as well as the two bombs of World War Two, give us a good idea of what happened at the moment the bombs exploded. In "There Will Come Soft Rains", the author gives us a detailed description of a house in the future, where virtually all household tasks are automated. The house descriptions are so detailed, they seem mundane and very monotonous. An example: "In the kitchen the breakfast stove gave a hissing sigh and ejected from its warm interior eight pieces of perfectly browned toast, eight eggs sunny side up, sixteen slices of bacon, two coffees and two cool glasses of milk." And this contrasts mightily with what the author implies has happened: an atomic bomb has exploded, and this house is the only one left standing. The juxtaposition of the orderly house and the destroyed, chaotic neighborhood around it paints a stark picture that, at first, makes the reader wonder what what is happening. The clues about what has happened come out in the sixth and seventh paragraphs: "The house stood alone in a city of rubble and ashes. This was the one house left standing. At night the ruined city gave off a radioactive glow which could be seen for miles". Then, the story causes the reader to think again: Is someone alive? Could anyone have survived? How is this house still functioning? Why is this house still functioning? But then, in

In the future, Earth as we know it will be taken over by comprehending technology and will become a staple of everyday life where humans will intermix with machines. In “August 2026”, the main focus is the setting, a mechanical house running a usual day. It starts off with us in a mechanical house located in a suburban neighborhood that used to be streamed with white houses and picket fences just like the one we are in. the light patter of raindrops is heard o the window sill. The house is waking up, and as programmed is making breakfast. No one eats when the food is ready because no one is there, but the house with its dedication to serving continues on. “The house was an altar with ten thousand attendants, big, small, servicing, attending, in choirs. But the gods had gone away, and the ritual of the religion continued senselessly, uselessly” (Bradbury 174). The house, even though alone, continues on cleaning and running the daily chores as programmed by its owners long ago. The outside of the house is described as a white house with only one black wall. The black wall is where the explosion must have hit, because we are given the description of five human silhouettes as described in the quote, “in paint a man mowing a lawn. Here, as in a photograph, a woman bent to pick flowers. Still farther over, their images burned on wood in one titanic instant, a small boy, hands flung into the air; higher up, the image of a thrown ball, and opposite him a girl, hands raised to catch a ball which never came down” (Bradbury 173).…

Both Chris McCandless and Jack London left to go into the wilderness to find their true selves. They both also had serious family issues, with McCandless’ father having a secret other family, and London’s mother attempting to shoot themselves. It is a possibility that through this they learned that humans are unpredictable, and unreliable, and as a result, they preferred to be in solitude for long periods of time, so that they would no longer be subjected to the random whims of other people.…

The title has the word ‘will’, which makes it seem definite that the soft rains will come. This adds effect, as the loss of humans is more evident and bigger as the reader thinks that this will happen. Also, the words ‘soft rains’ carries connotations with floods and water. Bradbury could be making the link between how when floods occur humans may die but the nature and trees are still visible, standing or fallen. Also, now the only rain that comes is the ‘gentle sprinkle rains’. This shows how natural rain has been long replaced by technological and artificial rain.…

Although technology seems to have replaced man in the opening pages of “There Will Come Soft Rains,” in the end, Ray Bradbury shows that technology without man is doomed. In the beginning of the story, technology has rendered man totally unnecessary in the day-to-day running of a house. For example, the quote: “Tick-tock, seven o’clock, time to get up…”(Pg. 87), shows that the house automatically has an alarm clock set up portraying the man as not needing to be responsible.. Another example: “Nine-fifteen, time to clean” (Pg. 88) illustrates that man is not required to clean for the house cleans for him. Similarly, the quote “Seven-nine, breakfast time”(Pg. 87) portrays the house cooking breakfast, even though man no longer lives there showing that man does not need to know how to cook..…

Ray Bradbury uses August 2026: There will come soft rains to question human's reliance on technology. A house is left standing alone after a Nuclear bomb destroyed everything in its surrounding. In the being of the tale the house is responding to a specific routine, continuely repeating itself as if it was afraid that nobody would. Ray Bradbury uses literary devices to represent the conflict ( human vs. technology or nature) in the story. The house that was created purposely to serve human's every need illustrates Ray Bradbury's theme that humans, when they are removed technology and nature will still continue to move on.…
