After a while on the island under Ralph’s rule, the boys get tired of working all day long and decide to join Jack’s tribe. Jack has a contrasting view of life on the island and his tribe just hunts and feasts. They do not even have shelters. Ralph and Piggy are the last to switch over to Jack’s tribe and when they do, all of the boys start chanting the hunting song they made up. “The beast struggled forward, broke the ring and fell over the steep edge of the rock to the sand by the water. At once the crowd surged after it, poured down the rock, leapt on to the beast, screamed, struck, bit, tore” (Goulding 213). After the boys killed Simon, Ralph realized what he did was wrong and he left Jack’s tribe. This shows that bad people can get good people to do evil things, but the person will always be good at heart.…

Ralph is tactful and diplomatic when dealing with the boys. Despite knowing the Piggy would not be much of a help but rather a liability on the expedition to determine whether the island was truly an island, he does not say so. Instead, he tells Piggy gently that he is “no good on a job like this”, without directly saying that Piggy would hold them back on this expedition with his physical disadvantages. This is contrasted with Jack’s tactless remarks to Piggy with regards to the same incident. Jack says bluntly that they “don’t want you [him]” and that “three’s enough”. His rudeness caused Piggy to feel hurt and embarrassed especially since this was in front of all the boys, as seen when his “glasses flashed”, an indication of his feelings. Ralph is a better person than Jack as he knows how to handle matters with diplomacy and tact while Jack is tactless and hurts others with his bluntness. The contrast between the two boys’ handling of Piggy’s desire to join them on the expedition is especially telling of their character and as a result, who is a better person.…

Despite almost all of the characters going through transitions due to the changed circumstances, Golding depicts Jack as the most explicit figure. “Jack and Ralph smiled at each other…The point tore the skin and flesh over Ralph’s ribs”. Initially, when Jack first shows up on the island, we realize that he is a leader of a choir, marching in military style. Although this foreshadows Jack’s totalitarianism and dictatorship, it still shows the typical characteristics of a typical teenage boy, wanting to take on leadership roles and smiling whenever possible. However, as Jack becomes obsessed with hunting pigs and eventually putting on the mask, he turns savage and gruesome beyond return. The fact that he uses a spear to attack Ralph immediately after Piggy’s brutal death shows Jack has completely lost his rationality and sense of human being.…

Soon after the middle of the book, Jack starts to make his own tribe. He does this by making remarkable promises and threats to them. He did this until the only one left with Ralph was Piggy. Jack ends up with one of his tribe members pushing a rock of the edge of a cliff, landing on Piggy, and killing him instantly. Jack seemed to have one, the power was all his, and Ralph was nothing. If it weren’t for the rescuers, Ralph would’ve been hunted down and killed.…

When Ralph approaches Jack’s tribe and blows the conch to call an assembly, we learn that the conch has lost its power among the boys. The conch represents order, and without it there is nothing to keep the boys in line. Even in his final moments, Piggy is still trying to get the boys to see reason. As Ralph is getting heated with Jack, Piggy attempts to get his attention and says “Ralph – remember what we came for. The fire. My specs.” After Piggy’s death, Jack orders Roger to torture Samneric into joining the tribe and makes the decision to hunt Ralph down and kill him. Piggy dying meant the absolute end of trying to reason with Jack’s tribe and any hope of peaceful civilization on the island. He is the parent figure and the reminder of moral among the boys, and once he is out of the way nothing held them back…

The impact of forgetting Piggy and Jack’s voices in meetings and not passing the conch and acknowledging them caused the death of 3 boys and the creation of a tribe based on killing. In the United States, when the House of Representatives votes on something and if someone objects what the majority thinks, they are allowed to talk for as long as they want to make their point. Similarly, the struggle of power between Jack and Ralph emulates why the checks and balances system was created in the United States. The president, while he is the public leader, has limited power and shares it with the legislative and judicial branches. Through this, the president won’t be an absolutist or make rash decisions based on emotions like Ralph and Jack did when they lead both of their…

Piggy and Ralph’s goal is to ultimately get off of the island, but Jack opposes that goal. Jack wants to hunt and have fun, both are not going to get the boys rescued. Early in the book, Ralph says,” The best thing we can do is to get ourselves rescued.” (53) and Piggy had the same intentions. All Jack wants to do is hunt, but hunting will not get the group saved and Piggy and Ralph know that. Ralph and Piggy seem to always be together. Meaning that they are physically always together and they think together too. The two boys also seem passionate about what they believe in. Unlike the other older kids, they stick with their first opinions on what to focus their energy on on the island. The other boys leave to go hunting with Jack and Piggy and Ralph stay with their beliefs instead of following the crowd. This means that they believe in what they are doing and that they should stick to what they think is right which shows great leadership because a leader should never follow a crowd.Piggy and Ralph also do not…

He comes up with countless ideas as to how to improve life on the island and the way to go about doing that. After the fire started by the hunters consumes most of the jungle, Piggy emphasizes that “The first thing we ought to have made was shelters down there by the beach” (45). In the beginning of the book, as Ralph finds the conch, it is Piggy that instructs Ralph in how to blow on the conch and make the sound that makes Ralph the “man with the megaphone” (7). More importantly is the role that Piggy plays as an adult voice on the island, a voice that the boys grow to resent. “‘Grownups know things,’ said Piggy. ‘They ain’t afraid of the dark. They’d meet and have tea and discuss. Then things ‘ud be all right” (94). It is this adult view of life and how he asserts his opinion that shapes the way Ralph ultimately begins to think and govern, and in a certain light, why he fails. Piggy believes that rules should be strictly followed, and this totalitarian view is shown when he tries to stress the power of the conch when speaking before Jack on Castle Rock. It is this effort to remain true to the ideals that the island was founded on, his ideals that were formed from intelligence and reason, that get him…

In the beginning, both Ralph and Jack are puerile. However the main difference between Ralph and Jack is that Ralph is a dynamic character, who matures as the story progresses, and Jack is a static character, who remains naive for the entirety of the novel. An example of Ralph’s immaturity, “‘He’s not fatty,’ cried Ralph, “his real name’s Piggy!” (Golding 21). After Piggy begged Ralph not to tell anyone that he used to be called Piggy, Ralph tells everyone that Piggy is his real name. As the story proceeds, Ralph starts to defend Piggy, “Ralph made a step forward” (Golding 71) and “That was a dirty trick,” (Golding 72). These quotes depicts Ralph standing up for Piggy after Jack punched Piggy for berating him about letting the fire cease. “‘He’s…

Piggy, Ralph and Jack are the three main characters introduced in the opening chapter. They are all from different backgrounds and represent different things. Piggy, introduced as ‘very fat’ is from a lower class background. We know this through the way he pronounces words such as ‘ass-ma’ rather than asthma. In the first couple of pages Piggy is chasing Ralph trying to get his attention which is ironic because throughout the book, including towards the end of the opening chapter, Piggy is constantly trying to get people to listen to what he has to say. This causes Piggy to represent the outcast of society. Although Piggy is smart as he is the one who discovers the ‘conch’ and knows how to use it, it is Ralph who is voted as chief due to his ownership of the conch. Through his want for grownups piggy is also a representation of rationality, it is him that tried to take a register and headcount when all the boys are together.…
