The reasons for this can be listed as following. First of all, due to the international background, great working experience and cross-cultural skills, Mark was able to adapt quickly and knew how to expand his network of contacts within and outside Energem. Moreover, the company also provided him with attractive benefit package, as well as a very good salary. Furthermore, Mark did not have to worry about his family and spouse. This is my second year at Winthrop. I transferred from Western Carolina University, and their English 101 class is like this course. It was about perfecting argument style writing, so I feel as though this class will partially feel like a repeat for me. However, we did not focus on learning to read, think, and write critically. I do believe this class will help with all of that, especially with reading. A lot of the time when I read, I feel like I am not understanding or comprehending what the author is saying very well. This could be due to lack of reading in the past several years, but also because of my lack of comprehension and critical reading skills.…

The American and Japanese cultures have been compared in a general context for their contrasting values. In addition, the two cultures have been described as ‘‘polar extremes’’ by Barnlund (1975) as stated by (Khan et al. 2009) , pointing to Japanese being reserved and formal whereas the American being self-assertive and informal. When accepting assignments in foreign countries as expatriates, cultural differences are important to consider. More importantly, cross-cultural management is a matter an expatriate should be prepared for and which the company should give importance to. In this case, Kelly an American employee, who is a programme manager working in the US accepted an assignment in Tokyo, Japan. She had little time to decide but she accepted the offer and the family moved to Tokyo. This report starts with explaining the stages of culture shock the family experienced. The report then summarizes the cultural clashes that took place in the case which were a result of cultural differences and lack of orientation, preparation and training. After that, the report highlights the factors Kelly should have considered before accepting the offer and gives recommendations on how the company should have offered this international assignment. Finally, suggestions of what can be done to remedy the situation are proposed.…

The case study that will be analyzed in this report presents the case of an American woman who has been living and working in Bangkok, Thailand for three years. It comes without saying, that her life in Bangkok has not been easy. She does not speak Thai language and many of Thais do not speak English, this poses a communicational barrier. She does not own a car and does not have access to the corporate car, this poses a navigation barrier. Moreover, she had to face some differences in the approach to work in within Thai people. It came as a surprise for her that while Americans are usually ready to fulfill the tasks on the short notice, Thais are more laid back and are not willing to rush with completing one or other task. Being unaware of this Racela had troubles at work and was under constant stress. Furthermore, to Racela’s surprise she has discovered that women are usually paid less than man at the work place, and, in general, her firm lacked structure. At the same time, they are many splendid things in Thailand. Racela enjoys travelling, getting to know foreign culture and getting used to accept the cultural differences. Racela’s income is also stable, being rather low for the Western World, though reliable in Asia. Finally, living in Thailand has shaped Racela’s personality and helped her become a better, more intelligent, mature and sophisticated person. The three years spent in Thailand has surely been valuable, though being offered a new job in Hawaii, Racela is not sure whether she should continue her stay in Thailand or return to America.…

In this case, I believe most of the blame should be placed on Mark’s company, Energem. Having expatriates, the company should be prepared for situations like this. Mark and his family held up on their part of the deal by staying the whole time in England, and Energem did not have a plan for Mark and his family. They did not seem to give him any support to his family or his for his career back home in Singapore. What was Energem’s plan for Mark after he completed his expatriate duties in London? Part of it could also be blamed on just bad timing for Energem and Mark Chan’s family. The economy back in the Asia-Pacific area was not the best for jobs. Energem seemed to virtually have not spot for Mark in the company anymore. The Regional General Manager position, that he was more than qualified for, was given to a colleague of his. The reasons aren’t given to as why Energem decided to move in a direction different than what they would have done in the past. There were several reasons for Mark and his family’s reentry problems. One of the main factors that affected Mark was the poor economy back in Singapore. Mark couldn’t find a job to his liking, and everything he did find seemed as a demotion. Mark thought his career was going downhill and wasn’t happy at all. A factor that seemed to affect all of Mark’s family was that they had completely adjusted to living life in England. His son’s had trouble adjusting to Singaporean life. School seemed to be the hardest adjustment. They both felt out of place and had trouble making new friends. Language was also a problem for each, as they had trouble communicating back and forth with teachers and other students. Jeremy and John also found some of the schoolwork to be difficult. Linda found that life in Singapore was not as satisfying as it was in England. She had trouble identifying with her friends again. Linda also had difficulty in finding another job in the banking industry, partially due to the poor economy at the time.…
