The stories being passed down by speech would ensure that they wouldn’t be ruined, burned, or even lost, thus maintaining the values and traditions that they have always held. Margaret E. Goldsmith states, “But upon their conversion to Christianity, they did not discard their inherited poetry.” (Goldsmith). Meaning that although the ideals may change and the way of life is different they remained true to the traditions they had always had, “... traditional dictions serves both the old and the new ideals… it has to accommodate the paradoxes of Christianity…” (Goldsmith) Thus, even though the story of the astonishing hero may have been changed over the centuries, the feelings and emotions that backed the story were elevated after the Christian elements were added to the story making it all more…

“Absalom, Absalom!” was my first experience reading William Faulkner and is surely will not be my last. I know that I will be forever mesmerized and indebted to Faulkner for the way that his writing has intrigued and informed me. The only time I have ever been so confounded by the way an artist could imagine, conceptualize and execute such and articulate and stimulating piece of work was when I first got a chance to delve into the sonnets of William Shakespeare. What Faulkner has accomplished in this work leaves him on a level that could possibly rival that of the Bard himself. An invention of language, storytelling, history, and reality itself is what William Faulkner has accomplished in this novel. There are several ways in which this book is mystical and mystifying which I will, in the course of this paper and in the course of my life, try to hash out what they have meant to me.…

Over the centuries, British writers and their respective literary works significantly impacted the Western Christian perspective. Beginning as early as the ninth century, you can find literary evidence of Christianity in vague monotheistic references in Beowulf that have led many scholars to believe it was of Christian authorship. These early writings show Christianity's influence upon the culture, but as centuries went by, the tides began to turn, and the culture would begin to sway the religion. Any search into this claim will uncover examples and methods innumerable and interwoven, but the most influential aspects seem to involve the role of morality plays, the political influences within Britain itself, and perhaps most strongly, the writings of England's three literary geniuses; Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Austin. It is therefore the intent of this paper to touch upon these influences and to get a glimpse at the importance of British Literature in the shaping of Western Christianity.…

In Analyzing Faulkner’s Absalom, Absalom one can clear see the correlation between Faulkner and Absalom’s story, However, more apparent is the similarities between Henry Sutpen and Absalom. Much like Absalom, Henry was the favorite of his father. We know this to be true because unlike his brother Charles bound, Thomas Sutpen actually claimed him. Also like Absalom, Henry is a kind-hearted man. We first notice Henry’s kind-hearted nature at the violent scene at the end of chapter 1. This view allows use to see that Henry did not take after his father’s harsh temperament and gives a glimpse of his pious nature. Notably, Absalom and Henry’s strongest commonality is notice in their…

Absalom and Achitophel is a landmark poetic political satire by John Dryden. The poem exists in two parts. The first part, of 1681, is undoubtedly by Dryden. The second part, of 1682, was written by another hand, most likely Nahum Tate, except for a few passages---including attacks on Thomas Shadwell and Elkanah Settle as Og and Doeg---that Dryden wrote himself.…

It is a philosophy that tries to foster an understanding that the whole of humanity is one family. It is a social philosophy emanating from a spiritual understanding that the whole of humanity is made of one life energy. If the Parmatma is one how then an Atma can be different?
