The participant of the interview was a male named Jake. The participant does not currently meet the physical activity (PA) guidelines of 150 minutes of moderate activity a week (Department of health 2011). Jake admitted to not meeting the recommended PA guidelines during the interview – “I only do 60 minutes maximum per week, which is not enough”. Further questions revealed Jakes determinants towards PA, which are explained below.
Determinants
During the interview the determinants of Jake were found. These can be broken up into 3 major factors; individual, environmental and cognitive. This can be seen with Jake as he feels that he has poor access to facilities available, he currently feels that the effort towards getting to the gym is not worth the benefits it would bring. The second stage in the model is the “Contemplation” stage, this stage is a step towards the right direction when the individual begins to way up the pros and cons again although still believes that the cons out way the pros.
The third stage is the first stage that see’s major progression towards the action. The individual will enter the “Preparation” stage where they will increase in self-efficacy and eventually weigh out the pros and cons to be balanced. The next stage is the “action” stage, this is when the individual will finally decide that the pros are greater than the cons. This stage is a very serious step in the model and involves the individual actually doing more PA for the first time, this means that this stage needs to go well and Jake must first enjoy doing PA in order to progress to the final …show more content…
Tobar (2012) researched the effectiveness on the use of self-re-evaluation and found that it decreased trait anxiety and increase self-efficacy. This method will involve Jake re-revaluating his current image of himself, Jake said that – “ I am very lazy and lack motivation towards PA.” This can be manipulated into him changing his evaluation of himself by the use role-models and target setting to improve motivation and push him towards meeting the PA
