Girl The poem Girl, written by Jamaica Kincaid, presents itself with great meaning and many literary purposes. The devices and styles Jamaica uses bring out the purpose of the poem perfectly. There is also a perfect balance of negative and positive turns in the writing. The subject and theme of this poem are very different. The subject would be presented as what this girl hears from people, specifically her mom, in her everyday life. The theme would be the specific details of the subject; things like what she is asking or telling her to do. During the 1960’s, a wave of feminism swept across Australian society, challenging the dominant patriarchal ideologies of the time.
