In the story “GIRL” Jamaica Kincaid we see the complicated relationship between mother and daughter and what I have derived from this story is that this statement. “Should a mother groom her daughter through trust or through force and fear?” we see that the woman in this story loves her daughter but is so drowned in fear of the world for her daughter that she seems to treat her in very questionable ways while she is teaching her life lessons. So we see that she seems to not trust her daughter to make that right decisions or act in an adequate manner without her intervening. Thus showing us that she thinks she knows best for her daughter’s life and making her seem like she thinks like her daughter does not know better. …show more content…
So you see that her idea of woman hood seems to be the drive behind the way she wants her daughter to be. That’s why she has this long list of things her daughter should do and things she should not do. We clearly see from this list of things that her view on woman hood is traditional and so making most of the things on her list questionable to her daughter.
These views basically show that the man must have the job and it is her daughters duty as a woman to cater for her husband’s needs need it be hosting guests, sewing clothes, cooking, setting the table and groceries. So her mother believes that if her daughter can do all those things her daughter can become a successful woman. But her daughter seems to try abide by these rules but most of them would not really apply in her time since things are different to when her mother was younger. So all the skills she was being taught were good to know but not needed in her time to be a successful woman.
This girls seems to be overloaded with expectations that seems to be impossible to meet all at once but her mother expects her to do so. She is piled with instructions and rules that seem like a hand full to all follow at once but the mother doesn’t realize that this may never be
