Little did the world know, on April 23, 1791, the 15th president of the United States was born. Given birth to by his father, a merchant farmer, James Buchanan Sr. and an educated mother, Elizabeth Speer, President Buchanan was born to be a dedicated democrat. After graduating as a Lawyer in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, President Buchanan has become a successful attorney. He has taken his role as a member in both Houses of Congress, ambassadorships, and a Cabinet Post. He has run for President in 1844, 1848, and 1852, before he actually gained presidency in 1857. “I like the noise of Democracy” (President James Buchanan 1857)
President Buchanan was a true Democrat. His election platform was revolved around the finalization of the Missouri Compromise and the concern of slavery spreading into territories. To further elaborate, during the time America’s issues was the expansion of slavery between the North and South and the equality between different states. President Buchanan was known by his fellow citizens to be a very quiet, almost boring president making his campaign run 100% honest. But he was mostly known for his principles, beliefs, and power in office that brought extraordinary situations upon the United States. “He clearly exercised a powerful influence on the crises leading to war.” (publisher, Smith)
President Buchanan’s major domestic issue was the problems with the expansion of slavery. Buchanan being a democratic was also pro-slavery. He wished to make peace between the North and Southern states. The southerners came up with a plan based on the Territorial Constitution. The slaves would be expanded due to the climate, geography, or other impersonal forces. President Buchanan took his idea to the Supreme Court where the story of Dred Scott was brought into a court case. The problem started when a slave, Dred Scott, had sued for freedom in Missouri on the grounds that he once lived in.
