Newco’s management team has diverse experiences, with extensive experience in fields such as venture capital, information technology, investment banking, database development, design, and Internet applications. The management team also has strong ties to the financial industry. The connections and experiences of Newco’s management team will help to market their product to the financial corporations. One of the main client targets of the product is investment banks and financial corporations; therefore the management team’s experience in the investment banking field can help market and guide the product for successful entry into that market. Among the outside directors is a PhD holder of economics, as well as, a former lawyer from the university of Chicago that has investment banking experience as well. Both of these outside directors will be able to provide a unique perspective to the management team. On the downside, neither the president nor the founders are technically experienced in the IT field, rather most of their experience is within the financial industry, which would be a weakness to the management team considering that their product is highly technical.…

This case provides us an insight into the Golden Years Investment Club and the conflict of group members when a newcomer challenges the views and ideas of the group’s experienced founder. Lenn Width, the founder of the investment club, has recently invited David Korn, a young architect, to join the twenty-six-member group. Width and Korn have very opposing viewpoints when it comes to how to invest. Width has a very strict investment policy: “a stock must have been publicly traded for at least five years; its sales must be growing by 15 percent a year; and it’s got to have a return on equity of 10 percent or better” (Fight at the Investment Club, 1994). On the other hand, Korn is interested in a more aggressive style, investing in riskier stocks with larger returns.…

The great advantage of publicly held companies is that they bring together capital and managerial expertise, to the benefit of both groups. An investor need not know anything about making or marketing chairs in order to invest in a chair factory. A gifted producer or seller of chairs need not have capital in order to start a business. When it runs well, both profit, and the capitalist system achieves its goals. Our system of capitalism has been less successful when the company does not run well. As some of America's most visible, powerful, and successful companies began to slide, they demonstrated an all-but fatal weakness in the ability of our system to react in time to prevent disaster. Managers and directors at companies like IBM, General Motors, and Sears took their success--and their customers--for granted. They took their investors for granted, too, until it was almost too late.…
