The sources that Richard F. Nation used in order to write the article “Violence and the Rights of African Americans in Civil War-Era Indiana: The Case of James Hays” were plentiful. Nation used books from other historian, as well as newspaper from the time of Hays case, civil records, and records of the U.S. census (Nation, R. F. 2004, pg.216, 218, 220 & 225). In the article Nation mentions that James Hays was an African-American, and at the same time was doing better then even most white in his community when it came to wealth (Nation, R. F. 2004, pg.216, 218, 220 & 225). Some parts can be interpreted as speculations because Nation does not provide any solid proof of his claim. For example, Nation mentions that one of the reasons why George W. Kimble might have wanted James Hays to leave Indiana, and sent the group of Caucasian men to beat him was because he was having an affair with Hays wife Elizabeth (Nation, R. F. 2004, pg.228). Another speculation that Nation makes is on the reason why Elizabeth might had committed adultery, Nation list a few reason why it might have occurred, but this does not add anything to the article because there is no solid prove, the only thing that is provided is speculations (Nation, R. F. 2004,
