“Lovelace and Flickinger were also curious to determine whether women could measure up to the same demanding physical standard that the Mercury astronauts established…. were reluctant to accept general assumptions about women’s inferiority and wanted to scientifically evaluate women and compare their data to men’s.” (11).…
Erikson (Burke, 2010) described eight stages through which an individual passes through to adulthood. Every phase is established on successful completion of earlier phases of development. If the challenge is not completed it is expected to re appear in future as a new problem. The psychosocial crisis in later adolescence is individual identity versus identity confusion. A psychosocial crisis refers to a state of tension that results from the…
Psychosocial identity theory is based on how an individual’s identity is shaped by their own development and experiences combined with their social surroundings. Phoenix refers to E. Erikson (Phoenix, 2002), who wrote about eight stages of development whereby an individual’s identity is built over their lifetime. He suggests that most of the time we are unaware of this and is only when something in our life goes wrong or changes that we become more aware of whom we are and therefore what our identity is. This seems to be why Erikson focuses mainly on adolescence, as this is when people tend to explore different possible paths that lead to certain friendships and life choices, he describes this stage as ‘psychosocial moratorium’ that will eventually lead us to shape who we are as adults. Erikson refers to this achievement as ego identity (Phoenix, 2002), where an individual feels comfortable with whom they are. As with anything or anyone in a stage of development, it is not always a smooth transition from one stage to another and the individual can sometimes be delayed or stuck on one stage; in reference to identity Erikson describes this as an identity crisis. Phoenix also refers to Marcia (Phoenix, 2002) who looked at Erikson’s development stages, particularly adolescence and suggested that people often go through different phases of their…

The way that the all-powerful Lord wants to come to us and meet us blow by blow in wrestling together, showing that he is willing to work together into a mutual negotiation even though he has the capacities to do whatever he wants in the first place shows how God wants an active relationship with us. The way that God embodies the form of a man in order to engage in this relationship embodies the way Jesus Christ was fully God yet fully human. Jesus took away the guilt of the world in a way that we don’t have to bring a gift of 550 animals to a distant threat in order to appease wrath anymore. Jesus bridged the gap of the relationship between God and humanity, making sacrifice unnecessary just like how God bridged the gap of the relationship between Jacob and Esau in a way that made Jacob’s 550 animals unnecessary.…
“You can't change who you are. No matter how you struggle, some things will never change. And maybe they shouldn't” (Thurman, Rob). “Identity is a powerful organizing presence in social life today” putting people into sections concerning likes and dislikes, culture and customs, separates them via social, economic and religious differences, identity makes a person, a person (Leve, Lauren). The character regarding one’s self is shaped by identity, how they view themselves, and largely how society views them. Influences that impact people into what or whom they will become, and how their presence is perceived, will shape them throughout his or her lifetime. Many are more conscious of their identity when put into situations where they stand out.…
The first person interviewed was a 15-year-old boy. He seems to be confident in himself and is not easily influenced by those around him. He is very comfortable in his friendships which have already lasted for many years. Though he is in the middle of the Identity vs. Identity Diffusion stage, he is happy and unapologetic for who he is becoming and does not rely on the opinion of others for confirmation of who he is (Berns, 2013). The last observation I could make about this boy is that…

In the 1590s, bearing in mind that the Queen was childless, the games for the throne began. The most likely candidate to the throne was James VI of Scotland and I of England (further in text as James I), the descendant of the Mary Queen of Scots. His accession was not without the complications, however, according to Fraser (1996) James I, possessing excellent diplomatic skills, played clever political game, toying with the minds of the Catholic world, raising the Catholic hopes of religious tolerance. James I led them to believe in tolerance towards the Catholicism and possibility that he, himself, and the country will turn back into the realm of Catholic faith in order the secure the place on throne (Haynes, 2001). However, later on vigorously…
According to researcher James Marcia, there are four identity statuses that people can experience throughout life when they are trying to develop an identity for themselves. Marcia asserts these statuses include identity diffusion, moratorium, foreclosure, and achievement. In the example posted in this assignment, the two students, Maya and Yolanda, seem to be experiencing opposite statuses from each other. Maya is going through the stage of identity moratorium. This means she is exploring her options with regards to her personal characteristics, experiences, occupational interests, and many other life possibilities in order to find her true self. In conjunction with that, she probably has no desire to make a commitment to any option until…
Adolescence is a developmental stage that occurs through childhood to adulthood. Adolescence is a critical time in one’s life in which changes are taking place through major factors of physiological, cognitive, and behavioural aspects. As for this period in life it comes with puberty that is referred to as a change and development in the body as a child moves from kid to adult. Also, it is a time where they begin to explore who they are as individuals and develop their own identities as they get more into adulthood. This stage is known as “identity versus role confusion”. The stage comes from Erik Erikson's model from the identified eight stages in the developmental process from birth to old age. In Erikson’s life-span stage theory, identity…
Adding to Erikson’s developmental stages, James Marcia proposed that individuals who are in the stage of finding an identity could be classified in four statuses: identity diffusion, identity foreclosure, identity moratorium, and identity achievement. Those with the identity diffusion status have not experienced a crisis nor have made any commitments, and are apathetic. Individuals with identity foreclosure have made a commitment, which their parents have forced upon them, but have not had a crisis. Teens with the identity moratorium are going through a crisis, and have poorly defined commitments or none at all. Ultimately, those with identity achievement have…
Self-structure is what defines the term, identity. Identity is made of what drives an individual, the abilities they have, what they believe, and their personal history (Marcia, 1980). Identity is one of the main struggles in an adolescents’ life. It is very important that children receive the proper guidance while entering their adolescence from their parents and peers. Although they like to believe that they are capable of developing on their own, adolescents need parental guidance to develop their path of identity development.…
