story follows a process of chronological order. It talks about how Smith and the people from Europe traveled by boat to find something different. When trying to find something different there was a departure of the ships and then the colonists ended up in Jamestown. In Jamestown they had to face many obstacles like illness, starvation, and exhaustion. For example at the beginning of the story the author says, “...such extreme weakness and sickness oppressed us” (pg.70). This demonstrates that the Colonists went through such obstacles.
The colonists had a very self centered leader who talked in the 3rd person and who referred to himself as a God. Throughout the story he would say things like, “... yet he so demeaned himself amongst them, as he not only diverted them from surprising the fort, but procured his own liberty, and got himself and his company such estimation amongst them, that those savages admired him”(pg.72). Here there is a perfect example that John Smith is described as a person who is admirable and like someone who should be considered special. Throughout the story it talks about how Smith took all the big jobs and how he took the burden off of other people. In the story John Smith uses words like “he, John Smith, Smith, and Captain or Captain Smith” to distance himself from his own writing. In the quote from above the author writes about “savages.” In this story the savages are a word John Smith used to call the Native Americans although he kept in mind that the Natives were benevolent. Smith is a very self centered person who only cared about himself and getting rich.
Another important topic about this story was the hardships the Colonists had face.
Plantation or harvest was very difficult for Smith and the Colonists because due to their late arrival, the crops wouldn’t grow because of the incorrect weather. Because plantation became difficult, food wasn’t as accurate as it could have been because the crops would simply not grow and this caused starvation. Some of the Natives helped Smith with food because he taught them about how the Earth works. The Native Americans were such good people towards the Englishmen but Smith still called them savages. “The patron of all good endeavors, in that despite extremity so changed the hearts of the savages that they brought such plenty of their fruits and provision, as no man wanted.”
The short explanation or summary of this story is so I can write a compare and contrast essay about this story and Of Plymouth Plantation. John Smith and his crew are the most important because they are the complete opposite of the other group in the other story. This is all important because it is good to know the background of the
story.
In the story of “Of Plymouth Plantation” it also talks about a group of Englishmen and their leader traveling to find something different. Although this story sounds similar to the first, it isn’t the same. In this story instead of a group of people who don’t care about each other, there is a group of people who rely on each other for comfort and support.
In this story a man named William Bradford is the leader of the Pilgrims in which they are on a voyage to find something better. These people travel on ship and stop at Plymouth where they started associating themselves. William Bradford was an honest caring and religious man who had good intentions in Plymouth with the rest of the Pilgrims. In this story Bradford refers to God and talks about in many parts of the story; “So they committed themselves to the will of God, and resolved to proceed” (77). This quote proves that Bradford would talk and intentionally mention God for everything.
The whole reason and purpose to why the leader, William Bradford came to the New World was to find and obtain religious freedom with the rest of the Pilgrims. Religious freedom was the reason these people traveled all this way, not for something something material or anything like that but for something that truly mattered. In this story the people who traveled with Bradford weren’t just any people. The majority of the people who traveled with Bradford were family or Puritans.
This is all important because once again you have to know what the stories are both about in order to make a compare and contrast. It is important to know that these two leaders and their crews were both similar and distinct.
One way that the author’s presentations of events and impressions differ is that although Smith and Bradford were both settlers, their ideals differed in many ways. For example, Smith’s idea was to bring people into the New World to find riches and also to tell the people back in England that in the New England there was good things. he said there was a greater pleasure than to be planting vines, fruits, and herbs. He does to try and convince people into coming into the New World. All he cared about was how rich he would become in the New World. On the other hand, Bradford was so different because he didn’t care about being rich. All he cared about was having the will to express his beliefs in his own way. He only wanted to worship God in the way he believed was best. Also they differ as leaders because in Smith’s group people will only care for themselves and not others but in Bradford’s group everybody was equal and would take care of eachother.
Although there are so many differences between the two stories and the two leaders and groups, there are many comparisons. One example would be that both groups came from England. Another example would be that they both unfortunately suffered from starvation. Also, they both had to deal with Native Americans and their culture. Lastly, both authors talk in third person point of view.
In conclusion, both stories are great just the way they are. I enjoyed reading both stories but if I had to choose with which group to go with, I would choose the Pilgrims because they were all about togetherness and religion. I know for a fact that the Pilgrims had an easier time coping with everything because they had each other.
