Jane Alternate Ending
As she stood there, light in her face, she squirmed a bit under the pressure. She heard only a few gruff voices from the crowd, the men only offering measly bids. She knew her father had been wrong about the bids he would receive. Nobody wanted a poor man's daughter. Not in such a society that was so fixated on social status. She knew her breeding was horrendous for those who cared. When she was younger it never mattered, not even to her parents. When her mother was alive, her father wasn't a drunkard. Jane remembered how he truly was. Once upon a time her father was a hard worker, a caring dad, and a loving husband. Jane was shocked, utterly shocked, that this much money was being paid for someone like her. She pictured the look of surprise her father adorned at this moment. No doubt he would be pleased with himself. Just as she thought the bidding could go no higher the auctioneer called out the final bid of thirty. The auctioneer didn't announce anymore bids, signaling to Jane that she had finally been won. Her new life was beginning in an abrupt manner and it was not the life she had tried to accustom herself to in her thoughts. Someone who could spend that much money on her was rich and she never even thought of the possibility that a rich man would want …show more content…

The other man addressed her now and she shifted her gaze to him, her eyes watching the line of his gaze, which was assessing her body. She licked and chewed on her lip in a nervous habit as she wondered what exactly was happening. Which one of these men purchased her? She had the slightest feeling that both men had the intention of having her. Her eyes shifted between the two, examining their handsome faces, their dark hair, and their regal, yet commanding look about them. Finally, lifting her gaze to the man who addressed her with a question. "Jane" she spoke softly, taking in a shaky inhale before she asked him a question. "Why would one of you take me as your wife? I imagine your family is not happy." she asked out of fear and

In all desperation, Eliza Stacey pleads with her father-in-law quite effectively for his support in paying for her family’s debt. She utilizes alliteration, understatement and pathos to reach the generosity of her father in law and examines her own situation with grace. Stacey opens the first paragraph with two flowing alliterations to magnify the difference between what she once hoped for and what fate has brought her. She coins her worldly hopes an “Advantage apparently about to be increased” but quickly follows with the anticlimactic “the hopes are frustrated and more than equally depressed by disappointment” (Lines 3-5). By pairing the uplifting “A” consonants with the following depressing “D” consonants, Stacey can convey her shattered hopes to her father-in-law.…
