The race that I personally indentify with is African-American or Black. It was easy to relate to this story because both Jane and I are a part of the minority community in America. I could also relate because although I have no immigrated to a different country, as a child I changed schools. Initially I attended predominantly African American schools; in the 7th grade my parents decided I should go to a predominately white school where I was 1 of 3 students in the entire …show more content…
school. So relating to the cultural change was easy for me to understand, I do believe that it could be hard for to understand if the family would have been of privilege, because I believe in America that economic class carries more of a difference than race.
Some of the theoretical framework employed in Jane’s treatment was psychodynamic and family systems theory. The psychodynamic was used to help hold Jane accountable for her actions and helped to show Jane what others (her parents) see happening with her. This theory helped show how the inner anger within her built up and made her begin to react negatively on the outer behavior. The family systems helped to view why Jane was so angry with her parents. For example her parents expected her to be like other Asian students that came to America and succeed in America, that pressure from her family was another reason for her behavior problems. Establishing and bettering the relationship and working on togetherness ultimately helped Jane Lee emotionally which gave her better success at adapting and becoming accustomed to her new lifestyle.
Reading this case study, I think I became more culturally competent, with understanding how the Korean family works.
The social worker was very competent with handling this case. One thing that stuck out to me was how she knew that a lot of Asian woman commit suicide, so she gave Jane the information on who to contact if feeling that way. Another thing that I learned about the special needs of Asian students is that with the culture of the Korean families, the parents thoughts about education and the pressure that those students have on the. This is why when helping Korean students, the social worker must acknowledge the importance to include the parents in sessions for the counseling to work, since the parents dominant a lot in the lives. Steps that I would take to ensure that I was culturally competent to handle a case would be checking statistics and researching the customs and traditions as the race/cultural of the client that I am going to
assist.
