Janie The Horizon Analysis
The horizon is a recurring theme that we see in the novel. In the beginning, Janie looks at the horizon and sees all the beauty and mystery that lies out in the world that she has yet to experience. At the end, Janie finds peace with the mystery of the horizon after her marriage with Tea Cake enables her to finally be happy.

    Tea Cake took control over Janie to praise her, convey his love towards her and because of the fear of losing the grasp of her forever. The narrator says, “ Not because of her behavior justified his jealousy, but it, relieved that awful fear inside him” (147). Since Tea Cake genuinely loved and praised her, seeing Mrs. Turner’s brother after overhearing Janie’s conversation with the Mrs. Turner, awakened the fear inside him. On the other hand, Jody controlled Janie because he didn’t want her to have a voice and socialize with anyone except customers. His voice was the only thing that mattered to him. In page 50 the narrator indicates, “He didn't want her talking to trashy people." Since Janie was Mrs. Mayor, she had a higher standard than all the women of the town. Jody preferred her to act like a white woman with high standards, wear hats, heels, and remain humble for the sake of his reputation. Even though Tea Cake was possessive towards Janie, he also knew how to control himself around her. Whenever Janie got mad he tried to console her and make her smile either by kissing or just playing around with her. However, when there was a conflict between Jody and Janie, Joe always physically abused her, isolated himself from her, and preferred not seeing her face until the day of his death.     His first show of power was when he stole Janie’s hidden money. Because she hid her money away out of fear of Teacake simply being a golddigger, it was obvious that she did not wish for him to know about it, much less have him spend it. Teacake taking her money clearly shows that he believes that he can take the money because it was his right to, and thus establishes his superiority. This idea is further supported when Janie does not seem upset over this breach of privacy, and Teacake does not seem apologetic at all. Later, he shows his superiority and ownership of Janie in the form of punishment. With the arrival of new planters in the beginning of chapter 17, Teacake is afraid of Janie cheating on him, despite numerous assurances of loyalty by Janie. This misunderstanding also demonstrates how Teacake, like many men, do not understand women. Teacakes ability to be “able to whip her reassured him in possession” (147). The whip is used to punish mules, and the use of the word “possession” further supports the metaphor of women being mules.     While she is living in Eatonville, there is a mule that dies, for whom Joe later gives a eulogy, “standing on the distended belly of the mule for a platform” (60). The fact that Joe is standing on top of the mule stands to represent the idea that Joe craves power, and will always assume the dominant position in a relationship. Janie will never be able to be respected asi an equal with Joe, but Tea Cake assumes a different approach. During the hurricane, Tea Cake is indirectly characterized as protective when Janie is in danger of being attacked by a “dog’s angry jaws” in the water, and he risks his own life to “[seize] the dog by the neck” and save Janie (166). The protective nature that Tea Cake displays not only qualifies Janie for the safety level of the Hierarchy, but also the Esteem. Joe would not have risked his own life for Janie’s, because he is too involved in his own needs to recognize hers.
