REPORTER: The reporter/ mother (Jaria) called with concerns for the victim, Jarecia. According to the reporter, Evelaugas (Maternal Great Grandmother) has custody of Jarecia and she will not allow her to see the child. The reporter said Evelaugas Vernette Stamps (aunt) is schizophrenic and the great grandmother (Evelaugas) allows her to keep the child sometimes (unknown when). The reporter said the aunt (Evelaugas Vernette) wakes the child up at 2:00am on a school night and talks to her, while knowing she has to go to school the next day. The aunt (Evelaugas Vernette) has been physically abusive towards the child. 2 or 3 months ago, the aunt (Evelaugas Vernette) pushed the child into a wall, but there were no visible marks or bruises. According to the reporter, the great grandmother tells her “your mother doesn’t care about you”; she verbally abuses the victim. The great grandmother takes the house phone away from the house, so the child can not call her mother. The great grandmother smokes marijuana in the house (in her bedroom), while the child is present in the home. It is unknown if the child has access to the marijuana. According to the reporter, when the uncle gets upset, he will pull out his gun in front of the child; last Friday, the incident took place in the home. The reporter’s sister (anonymous) said he also pulled the gun out on her and she left the home. For Christmas, the mother bought the child a cell phone, but the great grandmother took it from her and put it up in her room. The house is not suitable; the refrigerator is nasty and there is expired food inside. The reporter said the great grandmother purchases food (take out) when she has money. When the great grandmother doesn’t’ have money, the child has to eat the food in the refrigerator, and it is usually expired.     When abuse is suspected it is important that the individual’s health and well-being is seen as the priority. This is why the local child protection officer should be notified so that they can investigate the situation to prevent the child from harming themselves or the abuser from harming them. Even though it may be distressing for the child the means that the child protection officer will go to, to improve the child’s situation is worth the end goal of the benefits the child will feel once it is resolved. The individual is lacking in hygiene and clearly tired, so by someone intervening solutions can be found and support put in place to fix the problems that are preventing the child from developing and living a healthy life. If abuse is the case the child may need to be taken away from home this could be temporary but in unfortunate cases could become permanent unless they become adopted, but is important that children have stability. This may affect their social, intellectual and emotional development especially if they are at a young age because they need to form a strong bond with a primary caregiver which may not be possible in care depending on its quality. She may also get bullied because she is in care or may find it hard to concentrate at school.
