The fourth through eighth grade choristers enter onto the risers on the stage in organized rows, hands at their sides, shoulders back and aligned with nervous smiles across their faces. This is the students first time being adjudicated The auditorium is full of other students, teachers, and adjudicators from around the city ready to hear the product of weekly after school rehearsals throughout the school year. The chorus director looks around the auditorium and counts five former music instructors and the nostalgia of being that fourth-eighth grader on stage with those instructors floods the director's mind. She smiles, bows to the audience, turns, and gives a reassuring thumbs up to the bright, developing musicians in front of her.…
There are many universities that offer concerts or recreational activities for students, and one of them is Miami Dade College. On April 19, 2017 the college offered a concert in which many of the student’s participated; indeed, professors and guests were there and helped with the event. The concert was about music and poetry, both of them were sang and with them, many instruments. Also, there were many people there and all of them were enjoying the event, as well as I did. Many famous songs were played as covers in the concert; songs like “Summer Time” by George Gershwin, and “Fly Me to the Moon” by Frank Sinatra, as well other songs that were interpreted by professors and students. “Fly Me to…

Each choir was singing a different piece by John Rutter. In our choir there were about 8 different choirs that came together for this. The HCCYC was the only choir that included any middle schoolers, but since I skipped first grade, I was the only eleven-year-old on the stage throughout the entire performance. The concert started at eight-o'clock that night and we were the first act. We walk out of stage and everything hits us all at once. The entire venue is absolutely gorgeous, even more so when it is filled up with people. Everyone gets into their places, and Mr. Rutter had us pull out our music, and he started the orchestra. The entire room filled with the gorgeous sounds of the brass, woodwind, strings, and the heavy pounding of the percussion. We start to sing this glorious piece, and that feeling right then is one I will never forget. We all became so overwhelmed with the beauty of the music and it was simply a night to remember. This was the largest, most intense concert I have ever performed in. I got to have such an amazing experience on stage with such an amazing group of people in such a legendary venue, and it has given a whole different perspective on what making music really…
When the second week of February arrived, Kayla and I left Sioux Falls around six in the morning. Arriving in Brookings a hour later, we were driven to the campus and taken to a building with a large gathering room that held other schools whom had already arrived before us. We were assigned seats in specific sections—ranging from Bass, Tenor, Alto, or Soprano. Hours of practicing went by, and we had reached the last few hours of the day. Driven to a performance hall; we ran through all the songs once more before the final…
The Monroe doctrine was essentially intended to prevent the Western Hemisphere off-limits to European colonization. European powers would attempt to restore Spain's former colonies, attempts would be viewed as a hostile act against the U.S…
We approach the woman and she politely greets us revealing to us her true identity, the boss, who is the person in charge of relaying the rules to us. She informs us of the disqualifications, and the time limit of thirty five minutes our performance, Surviving Lunch, must be performed in. A total of ten minutes to set up and prepare for our first scene is the last bit of info she provides us with. In her hand she holds a timer, and as soon as the lady presses the button, Cimenski goes berserk. Like a military officer she spits out orders at us to prepare the first scene. Rushing, we haul the tables and lockers into their correct positions, and complete the task with plenty of time to spare. The lady wishes us luck and exits the stage. My mind goes blank, while we flush to the sides of the staging area hiding from the impatient audience. The lights shut off and blackness abruptly surrounds me. In an effort to adjust, my eyes blink rapidly. The black stage with black curtains. Black rubber flooring. Black backdrops. Dizziness floods my brain, and I struggle to not black out. Gradually light comes up, and the first line bellows throughout the large auditorium. Peeking out from my hiding spot, I see silhouettes of statues. In the far back, the light crew stands ready, their fingers on the controls. Glancing back at Mrs. Cimenski for reassurance, I notice a sickly green tint take over her face. I quickly look away fearing that the effects might be…
I sit down in my comfy red seat at Academy of Theatre Arts in Williamsville, NY. I look around and see that the house is full. Not one seat was empty. In those seats I see people of all ages with happy, excited expressions on their faces. This got me very excited for the show that was about to be presented for me. I am very anxious for the show to start and suddenly the lights dim, the overture music begins and the curtain opens……
In the past, I organized a united performance of the associations at my school. I guided and took charge of place selection, dance rehearsal and the design of the final stage effect. When we selected the place where the performance would…
The Oglethorpe University Singers and the Oglethorpe Chorale performed the concert at Conant Performing Arts Center on Friday, November 1, 2015, at 8 pm. The concert setting was smaller than the other venues we visited for previous concerts. The room was semi-lit, and classmates filled the concert hall. The concert conventions were not surprising as we have attended other concerts, and the conventions were the same. The Oglethorpe Singer and the Oglethorpe Chorale performance was excellent, they were in sync, and everyone did great. It was my first concert, and I was very impressed because they sounded like professional musicians.…
On Sunday April 7 , 2013 I attended the Junior Recital for Michelle Ellison (soprano) and Rachel Stanton (piano) at Oberlin College & Conservatory. Coming to my second show at Oberlin College I really didn’t know what to expect this time around. On this nice day at Oberlin College I observed many students outside playing their instruments and various groups outside singing in circles enjoying the weather. I could tell that these students were very passionate about music. Inside of the conservatory building the recital was held inside of the Kulas Recital Hall. This was my first time entering a room that was made specifically for musical recitals. The hall wasn’t too big but it was large enough to fit a nice sized crowd in a narrow room.…
One of the controversial topics of these recent years is now engulfing the education establishment. Very few people fully understand the implications of Common Core State Standards in the United States, but experts like educators, journalist, scholars, etc., who are in association with other teachers and researchers lead the way in making sense of them. Recently, though, new studies have emerged to provide data on the little-known truths from myths of Common Core, often referred to as a better way of standards and assessments than No Child Left Behind era. Common Core is a set of “higher standards” focusing only in Mathematics and English Language Arts in that way students are supposed to be well prepared for college or work fields. Common…
Upon entering the Valley Performing Art Center, I was greeted by an usher that was handing out programs. The auditorium had large curved pieces of wood on the roof for better acoustics. On the stage was a large backdrop with numerous amounts of different colored lights shining on it. The stage was oriented in such a way where each musician could be seen. The band consisted of a piano, vibraphone, guitar, bass, drums, and an ensemble of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, flutes, and clarinets. The audience sat in seats in front of the band on the first floor and I was seated near the front. The show started with the John Daversa giving an introduction of the show and the special guests. Throughout the concert, special musicians got to come to the front and play solos into a microphone.…

At 7:30 pm, people started walking in to the theater, just a few minutes after, the audience seats filled with the crowed people who come to support the dancer, or maybe interested in dance performance, and mostly have “dance appreciation fever” like me. After the introduction of director, all the lights dimed down and the curtain slide up. The light focuses in the middle of the proscenium stage where there are group of seven dancers sat down in the middle of the stage ready to perform. They started it off with the piece called Friendships that was choreographer by the Chair of Dance Department and also a director of Collin Dance Ensemble, Tiffanee Arnold. Under the direction of Tiffanee Arnold, Collin College's Dance Program has gained the reputation for excellence in dance education, choreography and performance. Music is Sinking Friendships by Jonsi, this piece was kind of bored to me as an unprofessional audience to really understand the concept of every part of the story they tried to tell. Not very clear, but I can point out some of the movement of the dancer described the image of friendships such as holding hands and dance in circle as a group. And it was ballet so I’m not very interested. Outside topic, the theater was freezing cold. I try to concentrate to the performance to forget the coldness.…
