What uniqueness Roy Lichtenstein presented is the content of his Pop Art works, Jasper John presented in his choice of materials and medium. Jasper Johns grew up in Georgia, in a place where he claims he was never exposed to art as a child and so he had no foundational idea of what art is or should be. This undoubtedly led to the choices that would make Jasper Johns a visionary of the Pop Art scene. After having a dream of the American flag, Johns began incorporating the image of the flag into his paintings. His second most famous rendition of it, known as Three Flags, probably epitomizes Pop Art’s fascination with using materials that were common and mundane. The American flag was an image that nearly every American was all too familiar with,

What do you consider when you hear the words red, white, and blue? Do you naturally think about the flag of the United States of America? Our flag, as we probably see it today, is not the first flag with stars and stripes to be made. After the original thirteen colonies declared independence in 1776, Betsy Ross would sew the first U.S. Flag displaying the colors red, white and blue. The First Continental Congress on June 14, 1777, changed the shape of the stars from the circle pattern of the Ross design to the block shape we recognize today. Congress would give meaning to the colors of the flag in 1777. White would imply purity and innocence; red would be hardiness and valor; blue would become vigilance, perseverance…

The first two pictures that are being compared are Shirin Neshatb “Allegience with Wakefulness” 1994 and Jasper Johns “Three Flags” 1958. In the “Allegience with Wakefulness” is instrumentalist. It is instrumentalist because it is the writing on this person’s feet is not English and there is a gun between the person’s feet. This might be taken as things that are different from what we are used to be taken as threat. American people in general have a closed minded way of looking at things. The other aesthetic perspective for this art piece that are noted is linguistic. Linguistic are has symbols as well and the gun could also be seen as a symbol. It has words written in it too specifically on the feet. This artistic piece is powerful because it can have so many meanings to it and can mean many things to many different people. “Three Flags” is a linguistic painting. It is obvious that this is a linguistic painting because it is the American flag. The American flag is tied strongly to American culture. It is a symbol of our freedom. Imitationist is the next aesthetic perspective that is seen in this paper, obviously because it looks just like the American flag. The American flag looks like it is popping of the page because of the way they get smaller as they move forward. Both of these art pieces have a strong message behind them. The first one, “Allegience with Wakefulness” has a language in it that most Americans would not be able to understand. It also has a gun which could mean a lot of different things in this particular picture. The second picture “Three Flags” is pretty much the opposite of that. It is very recognizable for everyone in the American culture. It stands for freedom our freedom.…

In the 1960s an art movement known as Pop Art had begun. Pop art was meant to be simple to aid the audience in creating their own interpretations of the pieces. Two of the leading artists were Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Warhol was a fan of women, unlike Warhol, Lichtenstein was inspired by culture; their paintings are both pieces of Pop Art but they are different because Warhol’s paintings are mostly of women and Lichtenstein’s are of famous cartoon characters. The artists used different techniques to catch their viewers attention. Both pieces of art displayed different messages to the viewer. Although both artists used Pop art, they had several differences in their artwork such as one being a real public figure while the other is a…

Louis Comfort Tiffany’s eclectic sense of design incorporated the styles of the Arts and Crafts, Aesthetic, and Art Nouveau movements (Johnson 8). He had an eye for ornamentation in which he transformed every piece in a room into a humanly functional work of art (Johnson 27). Light and color were strong for forces in the design of his spaces to create a sense of exoticism and romance (Johnson 33). Though his designs were lavish, he strived to make his spaces livable and enjoyable by the user, not just museum-like rooms that marveled wealth or status (Johnson 28). He grew inspiration from the artistic values of other cultures giving him a fascinating image of design where he sought to create harmony by integrating these principles with aspects of nature in order to make striking yet livable interiors.…

In the years following World War II, the United States enjoyed an unprecedented economic and political boom. Amidst this growth, many artists and intellectuals had emigrated from Europe to the United States, bringing with them their own traditions and ideas, giving rise to the the Abstract Expressionist movement. Artists including Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko, sought to express emotions and individual feelings, and personified this through their diverse bodies of work by exploring new ways to reinvigorate and reinvent their medium of painting. Thus embodying a distinctly ‘individual - American’* element of confidence and creativity, so much that it was sponsored by the CIA because it could be held up as proof of the…

The American Flag has always been representative of the United States of America and the freedom it stands for. One could even call it a symbol, not only of freedom, but of the American people. There are many symbols to represent the american soldiers: the Purple Heart, camouflage, and artillery are only a few.
