The Second chapter of Susan Hills chilling novel, The Woman In Black, is host to some of the conventional gothic aspects found in such ghost stories. The focus of this essay is the first eight paragraphs of the second chapter. Story telling lies at the heart of this novel and there is definite mix within the story of new and old ghost stories which would allow Susan Hill to select what she would have thought to be essential components of a successful ghost narrative. ‘A London Particular’ imparts a strong sense of place, mood, season and of the elements to the point that our main character, Arthur Kipps, is very effected by the various scenarios; whether it be sunny in the open or dark and cloudy. These senses mean the traditional ‘haunting’ fundamentals; an isolated house, narrow empty streets at night (lonely churchyards and convents later on), are heavily relied upon.…

Author Shirley Jackson doesn’t require her characters to investigate and discover the real identity or psychological problems of a ghostly manifestation in order to escape Hill House. The narrative does not progress with terrified inhabitants metaphorically yanking on a door handle, trying to move an unmovable door. Instead, The Haunting of Hill House…

Excitement begins in line towards the entrance of the haunted house because one is experimenting this with a group of friends. Fear rushes throughout the body, legs begin to shake, and palms begin to sweat because one is mentally preparing for what is coming up. After going through the 20 minutes haunted house toward the end, which felt like hours one begins to feel a relief because it is finally over. In the…

I believe that the ghosts are only a hallucination of the governess. I also think that the governess is suffering from a mental disorder, possibly paranoid schizophrenia. Hallucinations are common in paranoid schizophrenia, which would explain the images of the ghosts (which only she sees as both Mrs. Grose and Flora deny seeing the image of Miss Jessel which the governess claims to see). Auditory hallucinations also occur and the governess repeatedly mentions the absence of sound as an indicator of her visions. When she sees Quint in the tower, the birds stop chirping and the leaves stop rustling. She mentions the “dead silence” when she sees Quint on the stairs as the indication that her encounter is unnatural. She also has delusions of persecution, thinking the ghosts will harm the children and then believing the children to be conspiring with the ghosts. There are delusions of grandeur as well, with her seeing these events as an opportunity to be a heroine and win the affections of the employer with whom she is in love.…

Haunted houses have been a go-to horror location especially around Halloween. These sometimes gorey mazes attempt to freighted visitors with fictitious characters including demons and spirits that pop up out of nowhere. All the same, could some of these supernatural entities be real? Could ghosts actually travel through our world with little to know trace of one ever being here? Since young ages, people have been interested and excited by the existence of ghosts and the supernatural. Now that these children are older, they may be able to debate for themselves whether or not to believe in apparitions and other creatures of this variety. In order to contest these thoughts, one must consider why strange occurrences appear, if there may be any…

For the first time, I felt real fear, my legs juddering every step I take, like a man on a tight rope. In my mind, I was mentally preparing myself for the plague to pierce through the windows, with the sound of whirling ghosts filling the room and slowly take me away from this wretched place. Though all my anticipation and mental planning went to waste, I fell into a deep sleep as the sun was returning, and woke again in the next night. Slowly the windows were cracking, the fog pounding on the window, putting so much pressure on it that the house seemed like it could burst open like a balloon. Luckily I could react, I grabbed what was closest and ran.…
