Jay Gatsby is a good close up example of the American Dream and is very Idealistic. He left for the Military and he found out that Daisy was married to the wealthy Tom. He still had hopes of them being together after she had married someone. He threw these big parties and people came and went without meeting "Gatsby at all" (33). He was throwing these parties to help him get back together with Daisy. This could prove how romantic and in love he was. It could also suggest that he was immature because he was wasting all his money on people he did not know just hoping Daisy would be there (cliffs note). He had waited for her for "so long" and "dreamed" of being with her (71). The word "dreamed" might imply how impractical his dream of being with her was. It was just an empty dream and Gatsby is an old soul. He thinks he can "repeat the past" and "fix" his life "the way it was before" (85). Gatsby cannot overcome his past and start a new future. Gatsby is also in denial. He told Tom that Daisy "never loved" him but "she loves" Gatsby (100). Gatsby kept repeating that Daisy does not love Tom. It was kind of desperate. Almost like he was trying to convince himself instead of others. It was almost like it was a life or death situation for him. Later in the book Gatsby tells nick that he does not "think" she "ever loved" Tom (116). The word "think" could demonstrate that he is not sure anymore but he is hoping that she does not love her husband. It could also suggest that he was recalling a memory from the past. He could be trying to convince himself that their love was stronger than the love she could ever have for her
