Jazz Chamber Group Concert Reflection
On November 24th, 2015 I attended The University of Central Florida’s Jazz Chamber Group Concert Series Concert IV. The show began at 8PM ending at 9:30PM at the Rehearsal Hall. Three separate chambers performed: Wilkinson, Drexler and Rupert; all playing three different jazz numbers.
It was the early 19th century, when I was getting ready to go out to the New Orleans Jazz Festival. I was getting ready at my friend’s Cher’s house with four other friends of mine. The six of us all wore similar outfits and shoes; the only difference was our hair. We walked a mile and a half down paved roads into downtown. All of us were chatting away, hoping they would perform some of our favorite songs. Arriving to the Rehearsal Hall, all of us were happy to

Jazz is just one of the many genres of music in the world, but almost anyone can recognize a musical piece as jazz by the rhythm or the improvisation. However, there is more to jazz than the rhythm and improvisation; there is also the chorus structure, harmonic progression, and the instrumentation. In addition, an important element of jazz is the ensemble because it mixes different harmonizing instruments used in jazz to produce a singular sound as demonstrated by the UIC Jazz Ensemble. The UIC Jazz Ensemble, directed by Andy Baker, enlisted various instruments from piano to saxophone in order to perform a wide range of jazz numbers. The ensemble played various jazz tunes by several composers and arrangers. Additionally, the program offered…

On Friday, December 6th, I attended the Sac State Vocal Jazz Ensembles. The show began with special guests Christian Brothers Vocal Jazz. This young group of singers were extremely talented for their age. They held their harmonies and expressed their talents in each piece they performed. It was quite impressive and heartwarming because these students looked so into the music that it showed the passion they have for singing and vocal jazz. Following these talented young students, the Sac State Jazz Singers came on stage and did an excellent job at their pieces as well. I appreciated the song choices and arrangements for each piece. They definitely showed the hard work and practice they put into each piece and I overly enjoyed the show they put on. With all of the songs from both groups, dynamics, harmonies, unison, scatting, and different rhythms, especially in 4/4 time signature, were portrayed throughout.…

Throughout this course, I’ve been introduced to and learned about many events in history. One topic in particular that fascinates me is the era of the 1920s, also known as the Jazz Age. Following World War I, a movement began in America which caused dramatic political and social changes. One of the major changes included a new genre of music. With inventions such as the radio, Americans had easier access to music. Jazz was born, and with the help of new technology, became popular throughout the country.…

After growing up having a privileged life and going on to pursuing his dream, African American singer Cabell “Cab” Calloway devoted his professional life to entertaining his audience to a great extent and putting international spotlight on “The New Negro.” Indeed, Calloway stands as a monument against the popular stereotype of catastrophic black jazz musicians being tormented by racism and drug addiction. Even though Calloway was exposed to these social struggles, he was eventually able to overcome them by focusing on the integrity of his music. As Calloway reported in a 1990 Chicago Tribune interview, “ you tried to concentrate on your performance and tried to forget that there were hardly any blacks in the audience.” It was this kind of determination,…

Before taking Jazz class I barely knew anything about this type music. Six different bands performed fifteen pieces. Most of the pieces are written by popular Jazz composers, such as “Cantaloupe Island” by Herbie Hancock or “Donna Lee” by Charlie Parker. Also, there was one band that performed pieces written by its members, which really impressed me. For example, “Preparation” was composed by Alex Reiff, who plays bass in the band called Krista White 3 PM Combo. In this report I would like to pay attention on two pieces that I enjoyed the most.…

The name of the concert that I attended was called “TCU Jazz Combos” and featured a variety of jazz compositions. This concert took place in the Pepsico Recital Hall on November 14, 2012 at 7:00 in the evening. The event was casual; however, I chose to wear khaki pants and a button down shirt because I was not certain as to what the dress code would be. The performers’ names and their respective instruments were Mike Korson- Saxophone, Garrett Wingfield- Saxophone, Luke Wingfield- Trumpet, Alex Neal- Guitar, Edo Frenkel- Piano, Will Gilstrap- Bass, Russell Wharton- Drums, and Tanner Webb- Trombone. During the concert they played various jazz compositions written by some of the very performers themselves. Several other pieces were more well known jazz compositions from internationally recognized artists. The concert itself was not very crowded, with pockets of individuals scattered throughout the audience. There was definitely interaction between the performers and the audience. I found this aspect of the jazz concert to be unique to other concerts. Jazz concerts are significantly less formal than classical orchestra concerts or even piano concerts in which applause is saved for the very end. In jazz concerts, after a solo it is considered appropriate to applaud, even during the middle of a piece. Having never attended a jazz concert before, I found this to be a wonderful learning experience.…

Jazz, taking its roots in African American folk music, has evolved, metamorphosed, and transposed itself over the last century to become a truly American art form. More than any other type of music, it places special emphasis on innovative individual interpretation. Instead of relying on a written score, the musician improvises. For each specific period or style through which jazz has gone through over the past seventy years, there is almost always a single person who can be credited with the evolution of that sound. From Thelonius Monk, and his bebop, to Miles Davis' cool jazz, from Dizzy Gillespie's big band to John Coltrane's free jazz; America's music has been developed, and refined countless times through individual experimentation and innovation. One of the most influential musicians in the development of modern jazz is John Coltrane. In this paper, I examine the way in which Coltrane's musical innovations were related to the music of the jazz greats of his era and to the tribulations and tragedies of his life.…
