Coming from a Korean family, the Japanese invasion in Korea made me very depressed whenever I heard about it. Nobody in my family who fought in the war is alive now, as a result I didn’t knew how it really was. Of course, my Korean teachers told me many major facts; however they never told how Koreans were treated unequally. When I received When My Name Was Keoko, I was really excited, because now I’ll know how it felt to be living during the war. When My Name Was Keoko by Linda Sue Park is about a Korean family during the Japanese invasion at Korea. Sun-hee and Tae-won are the two main sibling characters throughout the book. Even though they are from a same family, they have different types of character traits. Sun-hee’s character traits are intelligent and curious. In chapter five, it says, “I loved calligraphy the very first time I tried it. It seemed that an unknown creature came to life in the brush as soon as I picked it up- a creature light as a dragonfly, smooth as snake, quick as a rabbit.” It told me that she loves to learn and has a great amount of knowledge, because learning Kanji is very tough to learn. Also, it told me that she loved to learn about new languages even though she didn’t like the Japanese were treating her. Her curiousness was shown frequently throughout the book. For example, she was eavesdropping one of her uncle’s and abuji’s conversation, and she would always ask Tae-yul questions about what’s happening to Korea and her family. Many of these similar examples told me that she wants to know every single event that is happening and wants to fit in. Tae-won’s character traits are caring and brave. He shows his caring throughout the book. Tae-yul seems to be rude to her sister however; he is doing these things in order to protect her sister from being worried. Of course, he sometimes has to answer these questions to get her stop being annoying. In chapter twenty, he volunteers fighting in the Japanese war to protect and help

Lost Names: Scenes From A Korean Boyhood by Richard E. Kim is an autobiographical fictionalization of the author’s youth in Japanese occupied Manchuria. Though not a traditional autobiography, the author tells his own story through the eyes of a nameless young man. The story takes place between 1932 and 1945. The young man grows and changes from the start of the novel to the end and meditates on the nature of war, family, duty and education among other things. However, the most important aspect of the novel is the way in which it portrays the Japanese occupation and the state of the main character’s family as a result of it.…

    - My interviewee was Ji Kyun Kim who is my grandmother. She was born in 1930. Interviewed her in her hotel room. She and my family stayed in Silversmith hotel which was located in Chicago. I interviewed her because I wanted to know about the Korea’s past which is part of my background. Also, while I was experiencing some schooling in Korea I had opportunity to learn about Korea’s history and I really wanted to know the real life and the atmospheres during those periods rather than just reading a history book. I researched the brief history about Korea before I went to interview and build up the schedule according to my curiosity. I selected her as my interviewee because she was the living evidence through the Korea’s history also, it was the great opportunity to sit down with her and talk about the history for quite amount of…

A character that caught my attention out of the set of episodes that I watch was Jin. His character is mysterious, introvert and does not know how to communicate his feelings. In addition, I consider that those traits are the fundamental reason of his problems. For example, when he punches a guy almost to death to save him from being shot. When he gets home to Sun, he does not explain to her what happened and she misunderstands the whole situations. Also, the way he acts in the begin of the series make us think that he is selfish when he is only trying to protect his loved one. We could see how his character starts to progress when he contributes by fishing and sharing it with the other on the camp. Furthermore, we could see Jin progression when he finally accepts that his relationship with Sun is broken and that is does not have a…
