Jean de Florette & Manon des Sources - How water affected the plot and characters

In chapter one of “The Color of Water”, Ruth, James McBride’s mother, starts out the book by saying she’s “dead” to her family. Her family wanted no part of Ruth and nor did she (Mcbride1). When she and her family moved to America, back then, her name was changed from Ruchel to Rachel. Ruth got rid of her name, Rachel, when she left to Virginia when she was just nineteen. The fact that Ruth becomes a fugitive is to stay away from her greedy, unaroused, racist father and the suffering of being forced into the practice of Judaism. Since she disliked her father, she distasted the relationship between her mother and father. Even though she deserted her home, she adored her mother. However, Ruth did not fully commit to Judaism and did not see…

Wallace, David Foster. "This is Water." Kenyon college commencement speech. May 21, 2005. Wallace's speech gives a look at reality. The way an American adult's life is. The way how everything is routine, how if not "well adjusted," you will be self centered and in default setting. He describes the daily routine of an American adult, and how he goes to a supermarket, packed with more people. He gets frustrated and annoyed by all of these people; how they are just wasting his time. He then starts thinking how all of these people are going through the same thing he is going through; they have rough days just as he does. If someone was to think outside the box and actually focus on the beauty of this world, they will not be bored, annoyed, frustrated,…

The only difference is, Meursault’s attempt to integrate himself into European culture is also the action that defined him as an outsider. During an encounter with an ‘Arab’, Meursault “fired four times at the motionless body... and it was like knocking four quick times on the door of unhappiness” (Camus, 59). At that time in Algeria, racial tensions are high among the French and the ‘Arabs’. To try to fit in, Meursault tries to enforce the racial superiority of the French when he shoots the ‘Arab’. In his world, killing the ‘Arab’ would help him fit in, but instead he knew it did not work. He states he ‘knocked’ at the ‘door of unhappiness’ implying that he was now on the outside and his actions would disappoint whoever was inside. The house symbolizes the European divide, with Meursault being on the outside of the house looking in. Although his intentions were to assimilate, Algerian citizens saw his actions as too extreme, casting him as the…

De Saint-Exupéry abundantly uses vivid figurative language to represent objects, actions, and ideas. Imagery is seen in many places in this book. In this excerpt from chapter two where it says, “There I was, safe out of the clouds; but I was still blinded by the thick whirling snow...” imagery is used to paint the picture of a pilot flying heavy snow (De Saint-Exupéry 30; ch. 2). Imagery also appears in chapter nine where Antione is describing clouds as “…fleecy white clouds, summer clouds… in which great gaps opened like skylights.” (De Saint-Exupery 176; ch. 9). Both of these examples convey a vivid image that enhances the text and helps the reader to visualize what is going on. Another literary device found in Wind, Sand, and Stars is a simile. Antione De Saint-Exupéry uses these figures of speech to compare many things throughout the book. An example of a simile can be found in chapter two where Antione writes, “I stared at your face: it was splotched and swollen, like an overripe fruit that has been repeatedly dropped on the ground” (De Saint-Exupery 34; ch. 2). In this excerpt, the word “like” is used to make the comparison between a face and a bruised, overripe fruit. Metaphors are also used in De Saint-Exupéry’s writing. A section from the text in chapter one says, “He made the county my friend” (De Saint-Exupery 5; ch. 1). Here, Antione is trying to express the idea that he had formed a “relationship” with the land because he knew it beyond the surface, bonded with it during his flights, and he respected…

In his novel, he attempts to show the tensions between following social norms and fulfilling one’s desires, in this case those of a young aristocratic woman. Placing her into higher class society as the wife of an important Prussian diplomat is meant to show the hardships and societal expectations one feels obligated to follow. The authors aim justifies his use of Effi Briest as the main character. Effi, being as young and free spirited as she is, is faced with a decision when her boredom and lack of spontaneity tempt her towards adultery which society finds unforgivable and abominable. Effi’s problem was that she was unable to undergo the social shift from her former self because in doing so she would deny her true, natural self and her desire for risk-loving nature. After Effi commits adultery she is shut away from society forcing her to lead a life of isolation and shame. Innstetten divorces Effi, leaving her to live and provide for herself with the little resources she had. Fontane’s use of age difference too plays an important role. The age gap between the married couple represents a society in the process of change in which the old values have lost their ethical validity but not to an extent to which they can not nullify the approaching generation. The age difference also represents the political status which questions the hold of the old age over the…

It shows the repercussions of Antoine’s actions as real as the director could make it. He lies and he gets punished, he steals and he gets punished. There is a clear misunderstanding of Antoine that the audience can see. Though this misunderstanding is not shoved in your face. It’s constantly shown throughout the piece that Antoine is just a naive boy growing up. Though, like many children of his age, he finds his way through with trial and error. However, like so many disobedient children, he tried what is easy. Instead of going to mom and dad for rescuing, his pride has him run away. Finding himself in more and more trouble, as he tries to be independent. This is one misunderstanding the audience sees very clearly. For example, Maheu and La Maheude do not seem to hold much importance in compassion, concerning their relationship to each other and their family. While Estelle lay in her crib crying from hunger, La Maheude pulls her sheets above her head in an attempt to muffle the scream and Maheu casually continues to get dressed for his day, unfazed by the choking coming from the crib. When the crying gets too loud, Maheu snaps. He grabs his daughter and violently throws her on the bed, commanding La Maheude to feed her. This shows the objectification of Maheu’s family members from himself and the lack of compassion practiced by his family. Maheu sees his family merely as tools for a means of survival. La Maheude also objectifies children. When talking to M. Gregoire, she finds herself surprisingly baffled when the topic of conversation shifted to her…

I consider The Fountain an epic because first, it has gods: Mayan and Christian; it’s got a hero, Hugh Jackman, other wise known as; Tommy, and the quested tree of life from the Garden of Eden. It is a life-altering journey also because Tommy finally sees all of the things in life that he has done wrong, like choosing work over his wife, and he also changes the way he treats people. This movie makes the way people think change because they can compare their cultures from today’s culture to that of the medieval days and finally how people could be living in the future.…
