JEAN PIAGET
HISTORY
Jean Piaget is a Swiss biologist from Neuchatel, Switzerland
(1896 – 1980) who studied at the University of Zurieh. Piaget’s work have been recognized by North American investigators since 1930 but further attention was given during the 1960s.
Piaget’s theory came about during his early training in biology.
He disagree with the concept of learning that was present in the mid 20th century.
INTRODUCTION
TO COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT
The theory of cognitive development is a comprehensive theory about the nature and development of human intelligence. It is primarily known as the developmental stage theory. It deals with the nature, knowledge itself and how humans gradually acquire, construct and use it .
Cognitive Development is a progressive reorganization of mental processes as a result of biological maturation and environmental experience.

PREOPERATIONAL STAGE
PERIOD: 2 – 7 years
This consists of two stages :
• Egocentrism – Children in this stage do not yet understand concrete logic; they cannot mentally manipulate information and are unable to take the point view of other people. They develop what is called animism; giving living qualities to in animate objects example dolls.
PREOPERATIONAL STAGE
Conservation – It is a logical thinking ability. This is the ability to determine that a certain quantity will remain the same despite adjustment of the container, shape or apparent size. But, fully develops in the concrete operational stage at a ages 7
-11.
CONCRETE OPERATIONAL STAGE
PERIOD: 7 – 11 years
