Fire Incident of Jeannette Walls

Summary
On May 17th, 1963, Jeannette Walls’ dress catches fire in her trailer kitchen while cooking hot dogs. Mrs. Walls puts the fire out with an army surplus blanket and their neighbor drives them to the hospital. The damage was severe but the doctors were able to do a skin graft on the badly burned parts of Jeannette’s body. The report was filed in the permanent records of the hospital.

Description
On May 17th, 1963, Mrs. Walls was in the room across from the kitchen working on one of her paintings while Jeannette was in the kitchen cooking hot dogs. At 11:55 a.m., Jeannette screamed and shrieked saying “Mommy, help me!” Her mom runs into the room, staring at her daughter swatting at the flames with a fork. Her mom runs out of the room and comes back with a wool blanket, throwing it around Jeannette to smoother the flames. Her mother then went to the trailer next to theirs and asked if they could have a ride to the hospital. The woman stopped what she was doing and ran to her car. [9-10]

The doctor led her mother out of the room telling her that Jeannette was in serious condition. They doctors took skin patches of her upper thigh and put them over her worst burned parts of her stomach, ribs, and chest. Finally, they bandaged her entire right side. Every few days, they would change the old bandages for new ones.

In many books in the history of WWI, the Kiel Mutiny is regarded as the final nail in the coffin of the German Empire. Dozens of theories can explain the sudden collapse of the empire in November 1918, some of which hint that the starvation in the “turnip winter” undermined the German war effort. However, Belinda Davis’ Home Fires Burning indicates that long before the terrible hunger between 1916 and 1917, the shortage of milk, butter, or other foodstuff had already been destabilizing the Reich. She describes that the British naval blockade and embargo devastated the import-dependent German food system. Focusing on Berlin, the book suggests that the protest against unequal and inadequate food supply motivated a marginalized social group, “women of lesser means” to come to the street politics. The authorities in Berlin had to meet continually the new demands of these women to control food price and distribution. When the demands for food…

Jeannette was cooking her own hotdogs at the age of three. While cooking hotdogs for herself, her pink dress catches on fire and is hospitalized for six weeks. Jeannette only being three years old at the time of the accident does not let it rule her life. After being smuggled out of the hospital by her father, she returns to playing with fire. Jeannette was taught to take care of herself at a very young age. She was taught how to cook for herself and to shoot a gun by herself at a very young age. Her parents believed that if you don’t beck-and-call on their child’s every whine or cry, it will teach them to grow up to be tough. This is the problem I find most interesting when looking at Jeannette’s childhood.…

In the memoir, The Glass Castle, Jeannette Walls presents the idea that being neglected can force one to look out for oneself even though one cannot eliminate hardships. Throughout the children's lives, their parents, who evaded their roles and responsibilities to their children by creating excuses, neglected the Walls siblings. The parents started neglecting the children from a young age where they would put their needs above their children. In one of these instances, three year old Jeannette caught on fire and was badly burned when she tried to cook for herself . “I was on fire … I could hear Mom in the next room singing while she worked on one of her paintings .” (Walls 9). Her Mother was more interested in painting rather than feeding…
