David Cottrell authors the book with a character Jeff experiences on management in mind. For a significant number of years things were not at their best for him. Though he worked harder than he previously did, his efforts were futile. In the midrib of a disquieting marriage and bad health meant that he was struggling in every aspect of his life. These problems had a dissolution effect on his management abilities. Against the egocentrism of leadership, he decides to face his challenges head on by seeking advice from Tony (Cottrell). Regardless of the fact that they did not out rightly say them the handwriting was clear on the wall. The employees had left him, their manager, not the company. He narrowed down his discussions to three irrefutable issues. The first one was over working the good employees while the others asked to do little. The second was lack of sufficient direction and supervision for the employees to be better. The third are the performance issues he once ignored.
Jeff at least had some knowledge of what to do to avoid losing more of his good employees. He organized a conference with his team. In addition, he prepared a paper for each team member to complete. The question read, “The main thing in our department is...” every team member was to answer (Cottrell). Every member had an answer but lacked consistency. This exercise was symbolic of the confusion that had rented the department.
Despite the low performance by his department, Jeff gathers the courage to have dialogue with his boss Karen. She appreciates the effort that Jeff presents by meeting her. He meets her in a better mood due to the realization that things he controls have contributed to the teams frustrations. He now acknowledges that he has the power to control some aspects.
