To Begin with, Jem seemed to mature a lot over the story.”Overnight, it seemed, Jem had acquired an alien set of values and was trying to impose them on me several times he went so far as to tell me what to do"(Page 131). In the beginning of the story, Jem loved to play childhood games which were fun for all children in the area. The children especially Scout enjoyed the games they created about Boo Radley. When Dill begins to come and visit, the children become overly obsessive about getting Boo to come outside and talk to them. Jem’s “bravery" and mostly immaturity, in the beginning of the story, goes all the way to touching the side of the Radley’s house and running away."He was difficult to live with, inconsistent, moody" (Page 131). This showed that even Scout could tell a difference in how he was acting, marking he was going through puberty. Even Jem's peers could tell that he was maturing over the story with him showing more courage and starting to stand up for himself. …show more content…
Jem always got along with Scout and Dill the most, being the oldest of the three he had to be the leader at most times. "I know what we are going to play," he announced. "Something new, something different. […] Boo Radley.”(Page 82). This quote really shows that he likes making new ideas and having his peers interact with him. Him and Scout even while they were growing up were always together. “Before Jem looks at anyone else he looks at me, and I’ve tried to live so I can look squarely back at him.” (Page 278) I chose this quote by Atticus because it really sums up Jem's interactions with people. Jem would look at his father first because he loves him and trusts he will do his best to make sure him and scout are always safe. Jem got along well with everyone, but he was always closer to the people he knew cared for

    Even though he is her brother, he is also her best friend, and they get along better than Scout does with any of the kids at school. As Susan McHale stated, “Like friends, siblings are a focus of free time activities in childhood, but they also share family-centered activities such as meals and outings” (McHale). Jem may be Scout’s brother, but he has just as big of an impact on her life and growth as any other person in or out of Maycomb. He can get annoyed with her presence, but he loves her greatly and enjoys how she looks up to him, even if he doesn’t show it that often. She is fascinated by his knowledge, though sometimes his attempts at being authoritative drive her crazy. She also enjoys being with him, and his presence is comforting to her when she is afraid. For example, she is excited the next year of school because, “The only thing good about the second grade was that this year I had to stay as late as Jem, and we usually walked home together at three o’clock” (Lee 77). She appreciated him near, and she also owes him her life. If it weren’t for Jem, then she may never have gotten the nerve up to go close to the Radley house or have been protected when Mr. Ewell attacked them. No matter the time or place, Jem has always been there for Scout and has made a massive impact on her life.…

    While Atticus is worrying about the Tom Robinson trial, Scout asks why he is worrying and with Atticus’ response, Jem explains to Scout “‘it’s something you wouldn’t understand.’” (Lee 131). She is then provoked by this, leading to her yelling at Jem because she is embarrassed and angry that Jem has changed and he understands more than her since he actually does. Additionally, Scout seems very angry as Atticus treats Jem more adult like, therefore allowing him to comprehend situations better. To Scout, it feels to her as though “Jem had acquired an alien set of values overnight” because he is now developing the mindset of a man as he has almost evolved from his childish ways (154).
