She looks beat and Needy, in voiceover, uttered one of the best, if not truest lines in cinema, “Hell is a teenaged girl.” On the surface, the line seemed to be a quip about Jennifer, a demon eating boys to maintain her good-looks and made Needy’s life a living hell; but looking deeper into the line, it seems to be the writer’s outlook on the literal hell that girls suffer, to become the woman that society or men expects them to be. In Ginger Snaps (2000), a film Jennifer’s Body is often compared to, Ginger tells her sister “…a girl can only be a slut, a bitch, a tease or the virgin next door.” Jennifer Check played all four roles when she needed to, to appeal potential lovers; for example, she played the virgin to appeal to the lead singer for “Low Shoulder,” even though her virginity had been lost several times over. Jennifer got everything she wanted as long as she played the game by the rules, set by men. It may have been her gift and curse, but it eventually ended up being her demise and the creation of the monster she became, where she seduced boys and left their bodies scattered all over Devil’s Kettle the next
