Jeremy Lin: A Hero Personified
My hero’s name is Jeremy Lin. He is a Taiwanese born NBA player. When he was growing up nobody ever expected him to become a successful basketball player. After Jeremy Lin graduated high school he went to Harvard. Harvard is a very academic-based school and to see a Harvard graduate choose a path of basketball is astonishing. Jeremy Lin rose to stardom on February 4th, 2012. He had a career night, finishing with 25 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds. Jeremy Lin showed me that no matter where you come from, you can always be successful if you put forth your best effort. Jeremy Lin went through stage one and two of the hero’s journey. Before his break out game, Jeremy Lin was sleeping on his teammate’s couch and wondering if he will ever become more than a benchwarmer for a subpar basketball team. Jeremy Lin was called to adventure when his herald (coach) told him to get into the game. Shortly after entering the game, Jeremy Lin put on a show. After this game Jeremy Lin thanked that God had given him the opportunity to play in this game and with the New York Knicks. Jeremy Lin had to sacrifice his health and time with his family and friends to complete his journey. After the final regular season game concluded, Jeremy Lin was left with torn meniscus in his knee. After the season ended the Rockets offered Jeremy Lin a 28.8 million dollar contract, which Jeremy Lin could not refuse. Now Jeremy Lin is playing in a Rocket’s jersey and has to miss time with his family and friends. His hard work both on and off the court make him the hero he is

“With the first pick in the 2003 draft the Cleveland Cavaliers select Lebron James” these few words would change the face of professional basketball forever. Lebron James was born on December 30, 1984 in Akron, Ohio to a 16-year-old mother, Gloria Marie James. Right away it was easy to notice that Lebron James was definitely an outlier. After years of study Joseph Campbell found that all heros travel the same path in their lives. Mr. Campbell named this famous theory the hero's journey. The hero’s journey states that the hero's must first endure several obstacles and if the hero passes all the obstacles he/she will be rewarded. This treacherous journey is repeated over and over again. This theory not only relates to us but it relates to everyone for instance myself. In fact my life’s journey as a football player and a grandson is much like the Joseph Campbell’s hero journey because I had left my ordinary world, met my mentor, and earned my reward.…

Many people think of a hero as a man or women that do an incredible act and more often than not many people look up to that one person. In the story A Worn Path by Eudora Welty, the main character Phoenix Jackson is defined as a hero. The hero in this story resembles what is known as unconscious heroism, which is a person doing heroic actions and not be aware that they actually are doing something heroic. Phoenix demonstrates this in many ways. Phoenix faces great danger during a trip she made down town one very cold December day to pick up medicine for her grandson. Phoenix is very old, frail, and nearly blind. This trip required her to climb through a barbed wire fence and cross a frozen stream. This particular trip almost kills her as she runs across a hunter. As she finally gets to town, she has a very interesting conversation with some nurses she meets at the hospital.…

One of the most important beliefs that Americans share is that personal striving results in upward economic mobility. The foundation of this belief is the essence of what is known as the “American dream”. For those who follow this dream, the conclusion must be made that one can overcome any obstacle with the necessary talent and determination. One of the most popular means in increasing one’s social status is through sports. Sports are ideal for understanding the pursuit of the American dream because achievement and success is highly emphasized in all sports. Also, sports figures frequently play lead role in the “rags to riches” stories Americans hear from the media. No one in sports today can carry the title of rags to riches to rags to riches again as does Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton. Born on May 20th 1981, Josh was the first overall pick in the 1999 Major League Baseball Draft by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He was considered a blue chip prospect until injuries and a drug addiction derailed his career in 2001.…

The Hero’s Journey is an important concept, it is the template upon which a vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbuster are based upon. Being able to analyze, understand and deconstruct the different capacities undertaken by the Hero is essential. The Hero’s Journey is a cycle made of super structures/steps which consists of both linkages and connections. It is composed of a beginning and an end, which ultimately are the same. This full cycle is attained through periods of loss and gain (hardship) which in turn are subdivided into different sections, composed of micro mini stages which together act as stepping stones leading the hero full circle back to the beginning.…

The heroes of today are not that different than the heroes of the ancient world. They have goals to achieve, obstacles to overcome, and quests to pursue. Their existence is necessary to inspire hope in generations of those struggling to survive and to find meaning in their lives. It could be said that our admiration and devotion to heroes is because we seek something that we can aspire to, whether it be to improve ourselves, to cope with our flaws, or overcome obstacles and succeed. Two examples of great role models, both past and present, for learning how to overcome obstacles and succeed are: Gilgamesh and Superman. During their obstacle-filled journeys of achieving goals, both heroes experience failure and success. In addition, both heroes receive critical help along the way.…
