The law and its ever-changing characteristics intrigued me at a very early age. Growing up, I wanted to be a lawyer. My goal of becoming a lawyer was a bit impractical due to my procrastination after high school graduation and because of my past financial situation. Not knowing what to do then, led me to join the Navy. The Navy afforded me the opportunity to go to school while working and it also allowed me to change jobs so that I can choose something closely related to my goal of becoming an attorney. That’s when I became a Paralegal, or “Legalman” as the Navy calls it.…

This summer I had the privilege of job shadowing a great lawyer and family friend, Nancy Bonilla. I have nearly always wanted to be a lawyer, and in all honesty I was a little concerned that after watching a real court hearing, and seeing all the work that lawyers actually have to put into each and every case, I would no longer wish to become a lawyer. However my fears were removed entirely as soon as I walked into her downtown Fort Worth office; the day I had arranged to job shadow Mrs. Bonilla, she had a court hearing in Denton, so immediately upon my arrival I was exposed to the last minute stress of getting the clients case in order. I was able to help Mrs. Bonilla with getting her paper work…

The telecommunications business concept of WorldCom was created with the help of Mr. Bernard Ebbers who was named CEO when the company went public in Aug. 1989 (WorldCom News, 2002). The company was well acquainted with Wall Street analysts and other investors, and in 1998, its $40 billion merger with MCI became the largest in history at the time. A year later in June, he was listed by Forbes as one of the richest men in the US when the stock ran up to a peak of $64.51 (WorldCom News, 2002). However, despite of all the success, the company came to a downfall when it was faced with legal issues. In year 2000 WorldCom improperly booked $3.8 billion as capital expenditures of which it did not account for their incurred expenses, but instead hid the expenses by pushing them into the future, appearing to its investors as spending less and therefore making more money (WorldCom News, 2002). Two years later the accounting scandals were brought to the public's…

When I first thought about becoming a paralegal, I was in working for a Trust and Probate attorney who also had a Title company. I enjoyed the data gathering, research, meeting people and understanding their needs and helping them find peace of mind. I had also just become interested in John Grisham novels, which, granted, does not truly represent the legal field in the most correct light, but they are legal thrillers nonetheless. For some reason the combination of these two things made me think about pursuing a career in the legal field. I knew for certain that I did not want to go to law school, since I was a Mom with a lot of responsibility. I took an on-line course to become a legal assistant. However, when we moved, I had to change my career as I was offered a very challenging position in the insurance field. I studied to get my California Life, Health, Long Term Care, Property and Casualty licenses. Then my job required me to get my Series 7 and 66. These were all on-lines classes, they were convenient and could be obtained around my work schedule. I am a classroom-oriented person. So, when I was laid off, I concluded that this was my chance to get back into the legal field and a paralegal would be a happy medium. In the meantime, my son graduated from law school and passed the California Bar. I now find myself wanting a job in a local law firm. So here I am now, writing a paper on the career that I now find myself eagerly…

After high school I attempted to pursue more of an education at Miller Hawkins Business College. I was only able to finish nine months of this college due to my husband re-enlisting in the United States Navy. At that time I was six months pregnant with my first child. With this move I withdraw from college and move with my husband to Pensacola, Florida. I did not continue my education; instead I started our family and put my education on hold. After 17 years of marriage and 3 children my marriage failed and all I had was my work experience and had lived secured by the military life. At this point I decided that I truly would like to finish what I had started over 20 years ago and get my degree in accounting. I believed that it was time to do something for myself and to fulfill some of my goals that I had started years ago.…
