I feel that Dr. King speech has been repeated and replayed for decades because of the powerful and life changing a word. He made his speech come to life and changed history. John Lewis speech is relatively known because he is still trying to stop the issues that are mentioned in his speech. Personally, I think Rep. Lewis feels as though the dream of Martin Luther King, Jr. still has not been appreciated.…
Dr. King was a Babtist minister and had been advocating nonviolence and civil disobedience. He utilized many things in his approach to the speech. The powerful setting of the Lincon monument, the man who ended slavery, his appeal to both head and heart, his vivid and metaphorical use on language, use of contrast, reenforcment and repetition, his call to action, and he ends on a powerful and hopeful note. "Free at last, free at last, Great god a-mighty, we are free at…
At the Bernie Sanders rally, he used a variety of techniques while presenting to the group. I noticed when he hit key talking points in his argument; he would use his hands that would elicit a stronger reaction from the crowd. He read his audience demographics well by hitting on housing cost, minimum wage and the high cost of tuition (all very important concerns of college students). However, there were some points he made I felt to be confusing. At one point in his speech, he mentioned how Native Americans were taken advantage of in the past. He tried to say that we should follow the Native American’s lessons and live with nature (and not destroy it with fossil fuel and natural gas exploration). It seemed he used a fallacy to connect two…
John Lewis introduces pathos into his speech when he is describing the violent methods of the government against blacks. For example, Lewis vividly describes the notorious actions of the government when saying, “What did the federal government do when local police officials kicked and assaulted the pregnant wife of Slater King, and she lost her baby?” (para. 6). In this statement, Lewis shows how the government has failed to keep black people safe and continue to harm them, and that these people harmed can not recover from the pain they have received. Lewis utilizes pathos in order to gain the audience's support, to gain their sympathy and perhaps make the event sound more gruesome than it actually was, which nonetheless was an inhumane act…
In 2008 former senator and presidential candidate Barack Obama spoke out on the issue of racial discrimination. In his speech, A More Perfect Union, he took the minute to let the world know about the racial issues that are being ignored and also shares his past experiences of what he has witnessed from his pastor Reverend Jeremiah Wright from one of his given touching on races other than African Americans in which he expressed the distorted view of the country. In his speech he uses rhetorical devices such as allusions, ethos and repetition to persuade and get across to the listeners during his speech. This helps him get his message out to the democratic committee about races having equal rights and also gets voters to vote for him.…
Martin Luther King Jr. wrote “Letter from Birmingham Jail” to church leaders and minorities. Even though MLK directed the letter to only the church leaders, I felt emotions and empowerment from reading it in the present. Imagine how much motivation and awareness the unfairly treated minorities got back then from reading this letter. His letter was basically about segregation and the negative effects it has in the world. He wanted to make aware of why segregation is not needed and how it affected many people outside of those who are not affected. MLK had no “actual” support from the view of white people because all his supporters were basically minorities who were wrongly treated. He didn’t really have leaders or impactful people who sided with…
David Hilliard wrote this speech in response to the trial of Bobby Seale, the president of the Black Panther Party. Hilliard was the Chief Editor of the Black Panther newspaper. His use of language throughout the speech is very powerful and thought provoking, even the two counts of explicative words are used well to enhance his points. Hilliard is constantly pointing out the evils of the American system, and shown through examples within our nations history. At the same time, he is trying to get his audience to see that Bobby Seale is just an ordinary man trying to use his constitutional right, the right to bear arms. He turns this around on the U.S government, stating that because…
Jon Stewart, an author, speaker, political satirist, comedian, actor and graduate from The College of William and Mary, took the time to address the graduating class of 2004 from William and Mary. The commencement address was a time for Stewart to express gratitude for receiving and honorary doctorate from the college. The speech was full of political satire, jokes about the university and some pure fact about life that every college student needs to hear upon graduation. For Stewart, addressing the graduating class was a chance to let them know that "college is something you complete. Life is something you experience" (p 204). This was one of the many ideas Stewart addresses in his commencement speech.…
In crafting his “I have a dream” speech, Martin Luther King Jr. relies on his credibility as a rhetor to assure his audience’s willingness not only to listen, but also to adopt his dream for the nation. MLK's life experiences helped him appeal to a broad range of audiences. Thus, Dr. King’s hereditary background, education, and occupation laid the foundation for his charisma, which informed his activism and effectiveness as a civil rights leader. Addressing an audience of hundreds of thousands of citizens is not an easy task just any orator could commence. It involves more than filling the air with positive energy and a certain sense of confidence.…

Examples that most would be familiar with is Rosa Parks` sit down for Civil Rights. Rosa Parks was a women who courageously refused to give up the seat she was sitting in to a white passenger on a segregated city bus. Martin Luther King, Jr.s “I have a dream” speech is also one of the most memorable and common speech`s that is known to Americans and some foreigners as well. Both of these african americans did what Alston was described in the book, standing up for what they believe in.…
Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have a Dream” speech has become one of the most famous, most quoted and most influential speeches of all time. He spoke about the racial injustice in The United States of America, and inspired people all over the world, even five decades after the fact. In the speech, King used many figures of speech, all of which assisted in making it as memorable as it is. By being an experienced public speaker King made people all over the country – and the world – see how the segregation of the blacks and whites had to come to an end.…
Frederick Douglass was a fiery orator and his speeches were often published in various abolitionist newspapers. Among his well-known speeches is "The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro," presented in Rochester, New York, on July 5, 1852, a version of which he published as a booklet. It is often studied in literature classes today. Douglass moved to Rochester in 1847, when he became the publisher of The North Star, an abolitionist weekly. There were approximately 500 attendees who heard him speak, each paying twelve and a half cents.…
