Jake Fallon reminds Millennials that you will not have your life together by 30. Unexpected things happen, like moving back in with your parents without telling them.
Homebody was hard to enjoy out of frustration of not being able to immediately figure out what was going on with the main character, Jessie (Megan Gorman). I found it hard to continue watching Homebody because I wanted to figure things out immediately but Homebody doesn't let you make sense of things until the end of the film.
The questions that ran through my mind while watching Homebody, was "Is Jessie lost? Is Jessie on drugs (which later come …show more content…
to find she was using drugs)? What is she doing?" I chose to settle my mind and not get ahead of myself and let the short film answer my questions in due time.
Homebody opens us to the house of Lisa (Jill Stanley), Jessie's mom.
The scenario is a black screen and a woman moaning. At the time I thought Jessie was in distress but later in the film when she repeats this act I put together that she was actually masturbating over the washer machine in Lisa's laundry room.
As the life of Jessie progresses in front of us we can see Jessie is in limbo while living in someone else's house. Funny enough we learn she's living in her mom's house. Not only is Jessie living in her mother's house but she is living in Lisa's house without her knowing.
As days pass Jessie becomes accustomed to her new living style and slowly faces the reality of her new life. While watching the film I had believed at first that Jessie could not remember why she moved into Lisa's house. As the film continues I believe that she is aware of who she is and everything that has happened to her but has an odd way of handling her new …show more content…
situation.
Jessie can be found smoking on Lisa's front porch while Lisa's at work and greeting Ms. Patroski who walks her dog every day around the same time Jessie smokes on Lisa's porch. Before Lisa returns from work Jessie sneaks back upstairs to her childhood bedroom so Lisa doesn't find her.
When Lisa comes home she calls her Jessie over the phone to catch up and ask about her life in the big city while Jessie is in the living room closet hiding because she lost track of time. Her mother gives her farewells via Jessie's voicemail and steps outside. Jessie takes this opportunity to run upstairs into her old bedroom and waits for her mom to go to bed.
Later that night, Jessie sneaks out of her mother's house to meet with old friends. In conversation, she leads her friends on about how she left her job and that her career was boring back in the big city.
Jessie seems to be an average woman who's a millennial that is suffering from failure. Jessie is still a woman that needs to have sex which leads Jessie to sneak in a guy from the bar into her mother's house. Jessie met Andrew (Dax Spanogle) at the same bar she was with her friends at. Unfortunately for Jessie and Andrew, they do not get to have the chance to have sex because Lisa hears something and interrupts their chances because both Jessie and Andrew hide from Lisa.
A few days later we can assume Jessie has ben doing much of the same thing and when we meet up with her on Lisa's porch for her daily smoke catches Mrs. Patroski's dog running loose.
This leads Jessie to find Ms. Patroski in her house hurt (I assume) and calls the ambulance to help her. Jessie unexpectedly saves Ms. Patroski's life.
The near-death experience Jessie helped Ms.
Patroski from motivates her to finally give in and call her mom in tears. While crying, Jessie asks to return home. Jessie tells her mom that she lost her job and has no money and wants to return home.
Lisa, kind as she is, accepts and wants her home. It was then I realized that Jessie knew what was going on with her life the whole time. She was ashamed of her failure and hides it from everyone including her mom, Lisa.
I'm hoping that what director Jake Fallon wants to get across to anyone especially Millenials watching the film is that anything can happen to use and that life is out of our control sometimes. When things like that happen we will need to humbly ask for help and start all over.
Although the process of starting over is hard and time consuming it all begins with accepting what has happened and making moves to get back on track with your goals.
As annoyed as I was watching the film, my mind was finally put at ease at the end. The 12 minutes of confusion I suffered gave me a small life lesson in return. As confused as I was it reminded me of the thoughts I endure daily trying to get through my day and handle life's challenges.
Take the time to enjoy Homebody, and let it grow on you. You don't always have to figure a short film out much like life isn't all figured
out.
