Jesus Christ Superstar
Jesus Christ Superstar, a rock-opera, emerged from the imagination of Andrew Lloyd Webber (music) and Time Rice (lyrics),which was later brought to life on the big screen by director Norman Jewison in 1973. Filmed on location in Israel, the movie is centred around the last seven days of Christ's life, from the time he arrived in Jerusalem up until his crucifixion. The movie is truly from the point of view of Judas Iscariot, one of the most infamous of all the 12 apostles. In the film, Judas portrays Jesus, not as a miracle worker, but as a real human being with faults, doubts, and most importantly, a superstar edge. "The play is a baroque fusion of styles, rock rhythm with ballad narrative, dramatic characterization with rollicking choreography, and operatic star performances that together paradoxically succeed in communicating a humble theme of love and acceptance."¹
The holy theme of divinity is combined with biblical history and a modern perception to produce a musical of heavenly proportions. Although there is some "divine" symbolism in the film, it never once shows Jesus embodying any immortal characteristics. The movie tends to focus on the realistic aspects of Christ's lasts days on Earth.
The last days of Jesus's life, in Jesus Christ Superstar, is comparatively close to the what is written in the Bible. Jesus, a rabbi, lived in Israel during the Roman rule. "Jesus was about thirty years old when he began his public ministry"(Luke 3:23). He taught for approximately three years about a just, all-loving, and merciful God that offers forgiveness of sins and eternal life. He spoke of the honesty of spirit, fullness of right purpose, and that the poor and suffering shall be blessed. He did this all while claiming to be the Son of Man. "We are told that Jesus taught a new idea-that the prophecies of the Torah [a document that recorded the basis of Judaism] were not to be fulfilled at some indefinite time in the future but were unfolding in the present."² As

where his photograph is crinkled in the shape of a cross, Jesus Christ is a definite aspect for theme. “Small wonder so many folks saw a blue-eyed Jesus in the role” (Pevere 1). It is a small wonder-isn’t it? How ironically the rebel of the film resembles Jesus Christ himself. “ Then too, after the station wagon bearing the dying Newman drives off into the rainy night, a dramatic point at which to have ended the film, there is a postlude establishing partly with flashbacks that Newman has Christ-like become a convict legend” (Champlin 4). Regardless of his…

The Messiah came at the perfect time and place between 10BC and 40AD. During this time period Christianity started from a Jew born from his virgin mother Mary. This was no ordinary Jew, this was Jesus Christ, The Messiah. Although many did not believe he was the Messiah he came just as prophets said he would, "But when the fullness of time was come, God sent his son , made a women, made under law." (Gal.4:4). I agree with "the fullness of time" theory because in the time frame that Jesus was born and raised was the perfect time and place for Christianity to start in some many ways. There are five important elements to the "fullness of time" theory. First; The perfect location, Jesus was born in the middle of many different civilizations which allowed him to spread his message to many different kinds of people. Second; The decadence of the Roman world, this had many people open to new ideas and ways of living. Third; Roman roads, this made traveling faster and easier than traveling through deserts and forest to get around. 4; the Pax Romana , this was so that the roman empire were at peace with each other and not at civil war which made traveling on the roads a lot easier because peoples were not shooting each other from either side anymore. Finally 5; Caesar's gift to the Jew's, this gift allowed the Jews to keep culture and not be forced into what the roman's did because of Caesar was grateful to them for rescuing him. These five elements surely made this the perfect time for the Messiah to come therefore completing the "fullness of time" theory. When Jesus was born he was an ordinary boy with a lot of wisdom, as soon as he started performing miracles…

Jesus of Nazareth was born in a Jewish family, raised under Jewish law. The most audacious claim Jesus would ever state was that he was the Messiah and stating that he was God’s son. After Jesus’ death, his apostles spread his teachings throughout the Ancient world. The teachings of Jesus of Nazareth spread across the Classical world because it provided hope for all it’s followers, taught a doctrine of nonviolence, and because it invited all people of ethnic backgrounds.…

Jesus Christ Superstar was a hit long before it became a musical. The musical was a rock opera concept recording produced as an album before it was staged on Broadway. It is based loosely on the Gospels’ story on the last week of Jesus Christ’s life showing the struggles between Judas and Jesus. The story follows Judas who is not please with Jesus’ rise in popularity because Judas believes Jesus is just a man, not a God and that Jesus being a threat to the Roman Empire will bring trouble to Jesus, his followers and to Judas. Judas eventually ends up giving away the location of Jesus on a specific day helping the Roman soldiers find him and go forth to crucify him. The original production of the Broadway show was back in 1971. It was composed by the ever famous Andrew Lloyd Webber and the lyricist was Tim Rice. The show was directed by Tim O’Horgan and choreographed by Tom Stovall. The producer was Robert Stigwood. The original city for the performance was New York City at the Mark Hellinger Theatre. The original set designer is Robin Wagner and the original costume designer is Randy Barcelo. The four main characters were Mary Magdalene played by Yvonne Elliman, Jesus Christ played by Jeff Fenholt, Judas played by Ben Vereen and King Herod/Merchant/Leper played by Paul Ainsley. The four most well known songs from this musical include “Superstar”, “Simon Zealot Poor Jerusalem”, “Gethsemane” and “Everything’s Alright”. The show first opened on October 12th, 1971 and closed on July 1, 1973 with a total of 711 performances within that time. The length of the show was approximately an hour and fifty five minutes. The setting of the musical is Jerusalem, house of herod, garden of Gethsemane and many other places during the time Christ was thought to have lived and was preaching the message of God. There were mixed reponses from critics but the loudest were those that though the show went against religious…

The Passion of the Christ directed by Mel Gibson depicts the final twelve hours in the life of Jesus of Nazareth, on the day of his crucifixion in Jerusalem. This Movie is hardly a historical documentary. It was designed to bring to life the vivid nature and magnitude of Jesus’s sacrifice, although theologically it was quite accurate, it does contain some historical discrepancies. This movie was accurate in its cinematic portrayal of the attitude and actions of Pilate, the Jewish hierarchy, the Jewish laws, and Jesus’s sacrifice. Almost all of the characters in this movie are theologically accurate, like the Jesus of Nazareth, His Mother Mary, His Apostles, Mary Magdalene, Pilate and his wife and etc.,…

Over the last seventeen centuries, Christianity has focused on Jesus as the Messiah, the Savior of us all, who was born to save us, and died cruelly on the cross to save us. There is another interpretation of the meaning of his life as well. . In addition, it has been widely believed in organized Christianity that Jesus' death on the cross was ordained by God as a means of saving humankind, but this belief only grew through the teachings of Paul. Too many today, Jesus is seen as a prophet, from the long line of Jewish prophets, going back to Samuel in King David's time.…

Mark conveys Jesus’ and death as the climax of all his work. Scholars believe that Jesus almost ‘planned’ his death, as he knew all consequences for his actions, for example ‘The temple incident’, when Jesus stormed into the temple in Jerusalem (Mark 11:15-19). Mark portrays Jesus as the servant of God who is sinless, but who undergoes suffering and rejection in order to carry out God’s plan for salvation of humanity.…

Based on the Bible and other records, I can say that Jesus Christ was born around 7 B.C. He was born of a human mother--which was Mary--in the land of Palestine. He ate and slept, he worked and prayed, he suffered and he died. Although countless efforts have been made for twenty centuries to reduce him to a mythical figure, it is hard for anyone to doubt his human existence. According to writings of the New Testament, which written by his early followers, Jesus was a descendant of David, the warrior-king of Israel. Born in Bethlehem, he was raised in Nazareth of Galilee. His birth was common in itself, although extraordinary happenings were reported as having taken place on this great event. Jesus began his ministry when he was about thirty years old, after his baptism in the Jordan River by John the Baptist. At first, onlookers noted nothing bizarre about him. Remember, for almost 90% of his life he lived as a humble carpenter. Then suddenly, with no advance warning, he began to speak with wisdom and authority. Those who knew him were surprised and shocked. Early on, the people of Nazareth excluded him from their synagogue. Opposition to him continued to grow until eventually he was put to death. Once his public career began, Jesus seemed completely absorbed in proclaiming that the Kingdom of God had come! There was a consistent singleheartedness about him. It almost seemed…
