Childhood memories of dinnertime hold a special place in my heart. What used to be a daily experience of family unity and sharing is unfortunately now reserved for holidays and an occasional Sunday or birthday gathering. Rather than each family member drifting into his or her own individual world as their life grew busier, we always had the interaction during mealtime to strengthen our family bonds and enrich the daily experience of community life. My mother would create a meal consisting of either a pasta, or meat and potato type meal for our family of six. Our evening meal always included a salad, plenty of vegetables, and a basic dessert like brownies, pie, or ice cream. There was never an official dinner time since my dad’s schedule varied. Therefore,…
In N.T. Wright’s book Simply Jesus, he tries to bring to light the character of Jesus, attempting to articulate both who he was, is, and his mission. He draws mostly from the gospels - though he borrows from other books as well - to paint this picture. Wright argues that the perception of Jesus has become muddled as culture and history have distanced themselves and confusion has ensued over the actions of Jesus, as they quite contradictory to general expectations. He calls for liberals and conservatives alike to quit arguing so as to come to agreement on what really matters, the facts rather than their interpretation. So much of the gospels could be described as symbolic, it is hard to understand with certainty…
In The Original Jesus, author Tom Wright examines Jesus in the historical perspective. He attempts to take you back to Jesus's own time in order for the reader to recognize the message Christ was actually proclaiming and to interpret it and the Gospels in the context of those times.…

Isaiah’s contribution to the development and expression of Judaism was heavily influenced by the political and religious context of his time. In the midst of political and religious instability in Judah’s history, Isaiah, was a recognisable source of hope and guidance, and paved the way for the expression of modern Judaism. The evident political and religious instability, was to be vastly influenced by Isaiah’s works. Isaiah took an active role in the development and expression of Judaism in his time, through his influence in the guidance of the aristocracy, providing guidance even for the kings. “Then the word of the LORD came to Isaiah: Go and tell Hezekiah… ‘I have heard your prayers and seen your tears… I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria” (Isaiah 38:4-6) Isaiah, as the mediator between God and his people, forespoke guidance both politically and religiously, redirecting the Jews back to Mosaic Law. As a result, Isaiah instilled within the hearts of Jews faith in God, in a time of suffering and religious apathy.…
The people must obey God. It was disobedience that resulted in the Babylonian captivity, so it is not advised that Israel do it again. Israel will be defended against enemies. There are also verses on the coming of the Messiah. In other words, there are predictions about Jesus. The predictions involve Jesus riding on a donkey, his betrayal, and crucifixion. The book ends with the second coming of Jesus. It is known as the “Day of the Lord.”…
Garrett uses the book of Habakkuk to demonstrate God can use a lot of different nations to accomplish His purposes. The world is a mess, and Habakkuk cries out to God for help, just as many people cry out today for justice in a world that continually spirals out of control. Garrett’s humbleness is surprising, even though the tone of the message is extremely bland, and his presentation skills only come from the paper that he reads. This is interesting, because most of the speakers have been very engaging, and this speaker is in direct contrast with the rest of the speakers that have been at OBU. All the while, he still makes a very strong point that Christians need to serve the kingdom, even if that means we are sheep in a world of wolves in a very harsh business…
In this scripture God was furious that Jews were worshiping other gods instead of him. It is shown Jeremiah was a prophet who forewarned the Jews to stop lighting incense in name of other gods and worshipping them. God even went as far to threaten the Jews with famine, war and death even then the Jews did not listen. The Jews mock, threaten and imprison the prophet continually for approximately 40 years. Until his prophecy of what god will do would came true, when Nebuchadnezzar defeats the Jews. After this the temple is destroyed the city is set to fire. Jews are left with two choices stay in Jerusalem under Babylonian rule or flee to Egypt. The Jews consult Jeremiah who say god would forgive them if they stay in Jerusalem under Babylonian rule and they would flourish as people but if they went to Egypt they will be punished and…
As diverse and multicultural as today’s society may appear, the majority of individuals have still heard of the gospels that help make up the Holy Bible. Although there are many in the Bible, the four canonical gospels, Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John, are perhaps the most widely recognized. These four, although composed by different individuals, share many similarities in common such as how those who encounter Jesus after his resurrection behave. Even certain traits that characterize Jesus himself after resurrection are somewhat related.…
Throughout my readings of Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography by John Crossan, I went in with somewhat low expectations. My reason for this was that the topic of religion, christianity especially was something I did not have too much care for. After finishing the book however, it did enlighten some questions I had on the religion. One answer that came into light when I read the book was concerning the gospels and testaments. I wonder why was there a need to have so many different variants, with minor differences in between them. As I went through the book, it becomes a bit more clear to me, as combining the different perspectives of Christianity will allow for a great combined experience. The second thing that was a bit more clear was on the topic of other great Christian tales such as the tale with Moses and how it relates to Jesus.…
I have chose Hans Holbein the Younger, as my artist for this critical essay. He was an accomplished portraitist during the Tudor Dynasty,as well as King Henry’s private painter. I would have like to have done some of his portraits, but I felt that it would be very difficult for this assignment, as his portraits were more of a modeling, as opposed to creative imagery art.…
33 "But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days," declares the LORD, " I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them," declares the LORD, "for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no…

In the novel, Under The Feet of Jesus, by Helena Maria Viramontes, the author conveys the harshness of being a migrant worker and how easily one can become stuck in the same job for their whole life. Viramontes, uses the main character, Estrella, a 13 year old migrant worker to display how this long-lasting cycle and precedent can be broken. Estrella is anything but a stereotypical young girl who has big dreams and plays with friends, instead, everyday she goes out into the fields and works extremely hard to support her 4 younger siblings and mother. Estrella never realizes the power she can achieve as she feels oppressed due to her status, but as she takes control of her life, it allows her to not fall victim to the cycle of only being a…
The history of the two kingdoms, Judah and Israel, is spotted with those kings who forget that they are in power by the grace of God and those kings who “do good in the eyes of the Lord” (The Holy Bible). Ahab initiates the down fall of the time of peace through his abandonment of the covenant. Josiah is the young king to regain favor with God and restore the convent between God and the people of Israel.…
