Brutus, the Tragic Hero Aynur Isik Julius Caesar is a play written by William Shakespeare in 1599 which contains a protagonist and a tragic hero who is played by Brutus. Heroes have flaws which lead to disaster, mishap and distress. Brutus is a character who struggles and receives constant pressure from all sides to murder Caesar, the leader of Rome. Brutus dominates his own actions throughout the play by demonstrating his strengths and weakness. Brutus’ actions may also represent unfamiliar, mixed and painful emotions that resurfaced in his heart. The protagonist is Brutus because he is the most honorable, he is too trusting and he is a remorseful character in the play. Firstly, Brutus was an honorable man for the reason that he did what felt right and what he felt was the best for Rome. Brutus was a positive a dependable character, therefore he often received positive attention from the Romans and they all respected him. Antony says; “This was the noblest Roman of them all” (V, v, 68). Antony still thought Brutus was noble after his death because he knew that the reason Brutus killed Caesar was not because of envy. Unlike the rest of the conspirators, the reason Brutus killed Caesar was because he thought it would be beneficial for Rome. In this matter, Brutus was an honorable man for caring about Rome which also led him to being easily manipulated by the conspirators. Secondly, Brutus’ and trusting character were his misfortune. He trusted Cassius but Cassius knew how gullible Brutus was and took advantage of him, encouraging him to go against Caesar. Brutus also trusted Antony with Caesar’s funeral speech, which wasn’t a good idea because Antony ended up provoking the mob to kill the conspirators. Brutus says; “No, not an oath; if, not the force of men the sufferance of our souls, the time’s abuse” (II, i, 120-121). This quotation shows that Brutus did not want an oath because he thought all of the conspirators were noble men who shall not rely on a few words to do the deed that Rome needed. Brutus was easily tricked by Cassius because of his gullible nature. Therefore, Brutus had a major impact in the play due to his too trusting character and this type of behavior also results in him regretting and going along with the assassination of Caesar.
