. There were several themes portrayed in this novel. Throughout his journey, we learned the many ways of how Chris McCandless worked. In Chapter Twelve, Krakauer explained a past discovery Chris made that caused him to view his father differently. “…Chris pieced together the fact of his father’s previous marriage and subsequent divorce…Walt continued his relationship in secret…”(121 Krauker). This revelation seems to inspire him to dismiss his parents completely; especially his father and commence a trek into wild America. Along the way, McCandless had some types of father figures, including Wayne Westerberg and Ronald Franz , and even a mother figure, Jan Burres. Christopher McCandless rejected what he saw as American materialism, in…

Popular culture is a curious thing. In a society where writers spend vast amounts of time and energy exploring the character complexities of criminals, portrayals of correctional officers are almost consistently unflattering and one-dimensional. Correctional officers are almost always portrayed as bad guys. They are depicted as inherently sadistic and mindlessly authoritarian, as one-dimensional characters without redeeming qualities.…

“I thought the Vietnam war was an utter, unmitigated disaster, so it was very hard for me to say anything good about it” (George McGovern). As said by George McGovern, the Vietnam War was a difficult war that was fought in Vietnam and caused many casualties and is thought to be a horrid war. The things that the American soldiers saw and experienced were unlike any other experiences. These experiences are shared in Tim O'Brien's book, The Things They Carry. Although many of these stories seem to be war stories at a first glance, they can actually be seen as love stories because of the emotional connection each character has with each other.…

In Toni Morrison's essay about The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, she discusses the racial problems and the use of the word “nigger” in the book. Morrison talks about the word embarrasses, bored, and annoyed her, but that “name calling is a plague of childhood”. She also talks about how there is a fatherhood issue throughout the book. She talks about how Huck can't settle down anywhere. He is almost afraid to be alone because simple things seem to frighten him. But then when Jim and Huck are together all those feelings of being afraid and lonesome aren't there as much. She kind of refers to Jim as a kind of father/ older brother figure to Huck.…

The wild west was one of America 's most violent times. The American Wild West is a period of history rife with tales of vicious gunfights and battles between lawmen and outlaws. It is the story of exploration and forging a new way of life. Men, women and children left their homes in the East and headed West looking for land and riches. While Hollywood has tended to portray this historical era as one of harshness and violence, scholars have suggested recently that much of the violence in the Old West was more myth than fact. While violence might not have been commonplace, it definitely happened, sometimes explosively. From the gunfight at the O.K. Corral to one-on-one gunslinger showdowns, history reveals that this was a dangerous time.…
